Phillies Mets 2 of 3 NL East

Phillies flex in finale, take series and first place from the New York Mets

Just when it looked like the Mets might hang around a little longer, the Phillies shoved them right back into the loss column.

Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa both went yard in a five-run fourth inning, and Jesús Luzardo carved up New York’s lineup with 6.2 scoreless innings as The Fightins bounced back with a 7–1 win on Sunday night.

That’s two out of three in the series and, more importantly, first place in the NL East all to themselves.

After Saturday’s frustrating home run derby loss, the Phillies responded like a team that’s not about to let the Mets hang around.

Schwarber crushed his 24th homer of the season to dead center to get the party started, and after an RBI single from Otto Kemp, Sosa hit a three-run tank into the bullpen to put the game out of reach.

Edmondo Sosa…Have Mercy

Another day, another Schwarbomb

Sosa added a single and a double for good measure. Not a bad night.

Luzardo (7–3) was nasty from the jump, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. He left to a standing ovation in the seventh after shutting the Mets down and getting his ERA back under 4.00.

Nick Castellanos chipped in with two doubles and an RBI. The vibes are high again in South Philly.

The Mets lose 8 of 9 games

They got a late homer from Francisco Lindor, but the most impressive streak in baseball came to an end — New York had won 28 straight games when Lindor went deep. That’s done now, and so is their brief moment at the top of the division.

Up Next for the Phillies:

The Phillies get a breather Monday before heading to Houston for a series with the defending AL champs. Ranger Suárez will open that one Tuesday night. Time to keep it rolling.
