NL East: Phillies flip the script, reclaim 1st place after being 5.5 out just 10 days ago
That’s how you respond. After letting the Mets run wild on Saturday with seven solo bombs, the Phillies settled things down, hit back, and reclaimed the top of the NL East with a 7-1 win in Sunday night’s rubber match.
Phillies flex in finale, take series and first place from the New York Mets
This wasn’t just a win. It was a reminder. The Fightins can beat the Mets and do it convincingly. They’ve now taken two of three, and over the weekend, outscored New York 24-14. That’s two blowouts in three nights and a message sent with a little extra muscle.
Edmundo Sosa Ignites the Phillies with a BOMB
The fourth inning was the turning point. David Peterson had been cruising. Then Kyle Schwarber launched a moonshot to center and the floodgates opened.
Otto Kemp drove in another with a sharp single, then Edmundo Sosa, who was hitting .077 in June — went oppo taco for a three-run blast into the bullpen. Just like that, it was 5-0 and the Mets were toast.
Otto Kemp continues to RAKE
Jesús Luzardo was nails, too. The lefty shut down a stacked Mets lineup for 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and striking out seven. He’s now dominated the Dodgers, Cubs (twice), and Mets this season.
The Lizard King is back
When he’s on, he’s nasty and Philly’s rotation is deep enough to do serious damage.
Sosa finished with three hits. Castellanos added two doubles. Buddy Kennedy started at first, Kemp was in left, and the Harper-less Phillies found a way…again.
They’re 47-31 and lead the division by a game. Just ten days ago, they trailed the Mets by 5.5. That gap’s gone. The tone has shifted.
Phillies back in 1st Place in the National League East

Next Up for the Phillies
After a well-earned day off, The Fightins head to Houston to take on the defending AL champs. It’s Ranger Suárez Tuesday, Zack Wheeler Wednesday, and Cristopher Sánchez Thursday as the Phillies shuffle the rotation to attack Houston’s righty-heavy lineup.
The NL East is going to be a fight all year but if this weekend was any indication, this team is more than ready to throw punches.
