Flyers add Trevor Zegras and covet more
The Flyers did it. They pulled off a trade to acquire a substantial talent that would actually stand to help the team in both the present and the future. They acquired the exact type of player that they need. A dynamic, visionary top 6 center with the opportunity to reach new heights in a better situation.
Flyers acquire Trevor Zegras in exchange for forward Ryan Poehling, the 45th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a 2026 4th-round pick.
Danny Brière swings big, lands Trevor Zegras in trade with Ducks
Trevor Zegras has fallen on some hard times since his age-20 and age-21 seasons, both of which were campaigns where he cleared both the 20-goal and 60-point plateaus. The last two years have been plagued by inconsistency and injury.
In the words of Daniel Briere… that’s why he was available.
Teams don’t just hand over their centers with immense upside unless there’s also more to the story. That’s just a fact of life. If Ryan Poehling could be traded for Sebastian Aho, we’d all do it. But that’s not reality.
Ryan Poehling can be traded for a chance at a top-line center, though. And a VERY reasonable chance at a good second-line center.
The last two years with the Ducks have made people forget what Zegras was like when he broke into the league. Partly, it was a fervor to forget. To erase what fans considered a dark time in the league, when they gave a video game cover to a non-star because of a single play he made.
They forget that, upon breaking into the league, Zegras was among its most dynamic young talents. A brilliantly smooth puck carrier with fantastic edge work and even better puck handling. A visionary passer with the anticipation and awareness to create plays that most players can’t even fathom.
For my money, it’s hard to ignore what the move to wing did to Zegras’ game in a negative way. These were sentiments enforced by Verbeek himself.
In an elaboration of that quote, he went on to explain why exactly the move to the wing wasn’t making the most out of his skillset.
“I think he’s more creative in the middle of the ice than having to play from the wing. We’re fortunate there’s Leo and there’s Mason. We find that they’re two pretty good centermen. Trevor has to kind of get pushed to the wing, and that probably doesn’t suit his best attributes, being able to play and create from the middle.”
What does that mean? Playing and creating from the middle? It ultimately means that Zegras’ specialty isn’t bumping pucks off of the wall and winning battles in the corner.
Trevor Zegras’ specialty is winding up low in the defensive zone, having the puck bumped TO him, and then using all of his skill and fleet-footedness to go end-to-end. He’s a constant coast-to-coast threat despite not being an elite speedster because of just how smooth he is.
On the wing, he still managed to show the core of his game is in tact. He had 16 points in his final 22 games with Anaheim. On a deeper level, you could see in the microstats tracked by Corey Sznajder that he was still Trevor Zegras.
Just… muted. In need of a better situation. His natural position, perhaps?
88th percentile in zone entries and 92nd percentile in chance assists is exactly what you might expect from Zegras. But that was on a team that struggled to get him the puck. Say what you will about the Flyers, but their struggle has been doing anything with the puck once they get it.
Trevor Zegras will help immensely.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he became one of the league’s premiere transition centermen and playmakers in relative short order. He’s always had that kind of upside.
It was just easier to forget.
But reinvigorated by a change of scenery and paired with Matvei Michkov heading into his second year? Trevor Zegras might make people remember.
And maybe… just maybe… it won’t ONLY be Matvei Michkov or Travis Konecny by Zegras’ side.
Maybe, Danny got his first taste of blood as a closer, and now he’s addicted. At least, that’s what he suggested.
Trevor Zegras was a brilliant start to the summer.
But what if it was only a start?
