Bryce Harper reinstated from 10-day injured list

After 25 days on the shelf, Bryce Harper is officially back. The Phillies reinstated their Harper from the 10-day injured list Monday afternoon, and he’s back in the lineup tonight as the team opens a key series against the San Diego Padres.

Ranger Suárez shuts the door on Atlanta, Phillies win series over Braves >>

Bryce Harper hasn’t played since June 5 in Toronto. He went 1-for-11 in that series before getting shut down due to a lingering wrist injury that became too painful to play through following a Spencer Strider fastball to the same arm’s elbow a week prior.

The Phillies hoped he would avoid a stint on the IL, but decided to play it safe and ensure that Harp was ready to return healthy.

This is big for the Phillies. They held it together since Harper went down, posting a 13-14 record. It wasn’t ideal, obviously, but it wasn’t as catastrophic as fans believed. The Phillies are currently 49-35 and in first place in the NL East. They are 5-5 over their last 10 after getting swept in Houston and winning 2-of-3 in Atlanta over the weekend.

Before the trip to the IL, Harper was slashing .258/.368/.446 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs over 57 games. Not quite the MVP-level of play we’d expect, but there’s no denying the impact that Harper has when he’s in the Phillies lineup.

To make room on the 26-man roster, the Phillies designated Buddy Kennedy for assignment. Kennedy had been filling a bench role but went hitless in 7 at-bats this season.

The Padres roll into town with a 45-38 record, second in the NL West and still fighting to stay relevant in a loaded National League. Zack Wheeler (7-3, 2.45 ERA) takes the ball for the opener.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are trying to turn a streaky June into a stable July and getting Bryce Harper back should go a long way in helping that. After the Padres, the Reds (44-40) come to South Philly this weekend.
