WNBA announces that a new franchise is coming to Philadelphia in 2030

It’s finally happening. After decades of being one of the most basketball-obsessed cities on planet Earth, Philadelphia is officially getting its own WNBA franchise.

The team will debut in 2030, and while the name and logo are still TBD, I’m already focused on the fact that Philly has five years to recruit Caitlin Clark to the City of Brotherly Love.

WNBA team coming to Philadelphia

The new WNBA squad will be owned by Josh Harris, David Blitzer, Comcast, and everyone else in the shadowy sports Illuminati who also run the Sixers and Flyers.

Not gonna lie, I would normally throw a few shots at Harris right now but I’ll give credit where credit is due for once in saying that it appears they have actually listened to the will of the people.

I could also mention that the WNBA is a failing product. The league itself is fully subsidized by the NBA and lost roughly $40 million during the 2024 season. It’s not profitable. At all.

Instead of focusing too much on that, I’m personally excited by the announcement, so let’s throw it back to Joshua Harris.

“This city’s spirit, grit, and love of basketball are second to none,” Harris said in his official statement. “We’re committed to building an organization that reflects that energy and is rooted in community and driven to consistently compete for championships.”

The Blueprint…

Philly’s team is one of three new WNBA expansion teams. Toronto and Portland will join in 2026. Cleveland lands one in 2028, Detroit follows in 2029, and then it’s Philadelphia’s turn in 2030, taking the league from 13 to 18 teams in five years.

It’s a massive step forward for women’s basketball — and Philly sports. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, a South Jersey native, emphasized the city’s deep hoops culture:

“From neighborhood courts to historic college arenas, basketball runs deep in Philly — and we’re proud to bring the W to a city that’s ready to embrace it.”

That’s the same pitch we need to start making to Caitlin Clark and Dawn Staley today.

If you’ve noticed, I pretty much handle all the WNBA coverage here at The Liberty Line, mainly focusing on Caitlin Clark, who has revolutionized women’s basketball ever since she stepped on the court at Iowa.

I would be an idiot to ignore the fact that Philly needs to start working today on getting Dawn Staley as the coach of the new franchise and Caitlin Clark as the face of it.

Clark is still on her rookie contract. She will have a club option in 2027 before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2028, so it doesn’t align perfectly but let a kid dream, ya know?

As for Staley, that contract perfectly aligns with 2030. She signed a historic contract extension to remain the head coach down in South Carolina through the 2029-2030 season. That’s makes almost too much sense to bring her back to Philly where it all started when the WNBA has finally arrived.

Backup Plan: Focus on my future daughter being the face of the WNBA in Philly

Hand up. I don’t have kids yet but if the good lord blesses me with a beautiful wife and a daughter, she will be raised right and dribbling a basketball by the age of two. I promise that her scouting report will be filled with nothing but tenacity, grit, and trash-talk with a field goal percentage well above 45% from anywhere on the court.

It’s a long-term play that will guarantee me court side seats while solidifying my spot as the official WNBA reporter for The Liberty Line. I’ll be the WOJ of the WNBA and be dropping bombs about _____ Conrad breaking all the records that Caitlin Clark set in the league already.

It’s time to lock in Philly

Caitlin, if you’re reading this, we’re already clearing a locker for you. We’ve got five years until tip-off. That’s five years to build the culture, pack the stands, and lay the foundation for a dynasty.

I also need to get busy myself. Find a nice woman, settle down a bit, and focus on training the next face of the WNBA. I can’t document all of that on The Liberty Line. Seems more in-line with the content you’ll find on OnlyFans, if you know what I mean. No official word if I’ll take my talents to that platform but I’ll definitely keep ya’ll updated here.

To everyone else in Philadelphia: it’s time to rally. It’s time to plan. It’s time to manifest. This isn’t just a team. This is a moment. A movement. A chance to redefine what women’s sports can look like in the best sports city in America.

Let’s build something historic.
