Zack Wheeler flirts with perfection, shoves a one-hitter as Bryson Stott delivers late vs Reds
Zack Wheeler turned Citizens Bank Park into a clinic on Sunday afternoon. The Phillies’ ace threw a one-hit complete game, needing just 108 pitches to mow down the Reds in a 3-1 win that closed out the series.
It was Wheeler’s first complete game since 2021, and he made it count—12 strikeouts, no walks, and only one Cincinnati baserunner the entire game: a solo homer from Austin Hays to lead off the fifth.
Zack Wheeler Flirts with Perfection
That was it. That’s the list.
Since coming back from paternity leave on June 9, Wheeler has allowed three earned runs in 40 innings. The man is on another level and the NL Pitcher of the Month in June looks like he’s ready to win the thing again in July.
After Wheeler blew away Tyler Stephenson on pitch No. 100 to end the eighth, Realmuto sparked the go-ahead rally with a one-out single in the bottom half. Bryson Stott stepped in next and launched a two-run homer off Reds reliever Tony Santillan to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead.
Wheeler took it the rest of the way and shut the door in the ninth without breaking a sweat.
Historic Stat Line
Wheeler became just the third Phillies pitcher since 1901 to go 8+ innings and allow a home run as his only baserunner. Elite company. Elite outing.
- Robin Roberts (May 13, 1954)
- Curt Schilling (Sept. 9, 1992)
- Zack Wheeler (Jul. 6, 2025)
Kyle Schwarber tied the game in the fifth with a two-out RBI double. Bryson Stott’s HR was his 6th of the year and couldn’t have come at a better time. The Phillies bullpen got the day off.

The Fightins are Heading West

Wheeler just gave them the perfect sendoff.
