Cam York inks 5-year extension as Flyers lock in core piece on the blue line

The rebuild continues but the foundation is taking shape. The Flyers and Cam York agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $5.15 million AAV, locking down one of the team’s key young defensemen through the 2029-30 season.

The deal, announced Sunday by GM Danny Brière, is another clear sign that the Flyers view York as a long-term piece of their blue line puzzle.

What the Flyers Are Getting

York, 24, finished this past season with 17 points (4G, 13A) in 66 games, ranking second among Flyers defensemen in ice time (20:47 per game).

He’s not flashy, but he’s poised, reliable, and still developing. He also happens to be one of the only defensemen on the roster Torts trusted to play in every situation.

Two seasons ago, Cam York played all 82 games and posted a career-high 30 points. He’s not just a stay-at-home guy—there’s offensive upside in there too.

The Numbers

  • 5 years, $25.75 million total
  • $5.15M AAV
  • 235 NHL games, all with the Flyers
  • 77 career points (19G, 58A)

For a 24-year-old defenseman still trending up, that’s strong value—especially as the cap continues to rise.

The Background

York’s been on the radar since the Flyers took him 14th overall in the 2019 Draft, and he’s done pretty much everything asked of him since.

Before joining the NHL ranks, he ran the show at Michigan, won Big Ten Defenseman of the Year, and captained Team USA to gold at the 2021 World Juniors.

Oh, and he’s one of only two defensemen in NTDP history to record 100+ points. The résumé speaks for itself.

This is the kind of move the Flyers had to make.

York isn’t just part of the present—he’s a pillar of the future. You don’t let 24-year-old, mobile, top-four defensemen walk. Not now. Not in this league.

Strong deal for both sides. The price is right. The term is right. With Cam York locked in, the Flyers can keep building out a blue line that might actually be worth getting excited about in a year or two. Now let’s go find him a partner.
