Sixers bring back 39-year-old Kyle Lowry, hopefully to just hold a clipboard
The Sixers are running it back…with Kyle Lowry.
At the fresh age of 39-years old, Kyle Lowry is returning to the Sixers on a vet minimum contract. This comes days after the team decided to bring back 35-year old Eric Gordon, which would have been a sick backcourt duo if we were stuck in the year 2016.
Sixers bring back 39-year-old Kyle Lowry, hopefully to just hold a clipboard
These days, let’s all just hope that Lowry and Gordon don’t see the court in case of an emergency situation. I would like to officially cap their playing time at 30 games combined in 2025.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the veteran leadership from Kyle Lowry. He’s a good lock room presence and a Philly native, but I think we’re all on the same page in saying that Lowry is better use as a glorified assistant coaching hire.
Lowry played 35 games last season and looked cooked for most of them, aside from a solid stretch run and that nice Game 1 vs. the Knicks a year prior. Gordon played 39 games, popped off in January when no one was watching, and then shut it down for wrist surgery. Together, they logged about as many games as their ages.
VJ Edgecombe is being forced to wear No. 77 because 39-year old Kyle Lowry wears No. 7 and I hate it
You already have Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, VJ Edgecombe, and maybe Quentin Grimes in the backcourt. The goal here isn’t to see if Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon can squeeze out a few decent minutes in February. The goal is to develop the young guys, win real playoff series and if hell freezes over, win an NBA Championship.
So yeah, if Lowry and Gordon are here to drop some wisdom in practice, keep the locker room steady, and whisper playoff tips to McCain and Edgecombe that’s great and worth the roster spot.
On the flip side, if we look up in March and Kyle Lowry is playing 30 minutes because someone rolled an ankle then get ready to wave that white flag again.
Let’s hope it never gets there.
