Umpire Phil Cuzzi robs Phillies with disasterclass behind home plate

MLB umpire Phil Cuzzi did his best Angel Hernandez impression in the 8th inning of Monday night’s game between the Phillies and the Giants. Orion Kerkering was on the mound for the Fightins in a 1-1 ball game to face Matt Chapman, and Cuzzi proceeded to make the moment all about his complete incompetence.

Phil Cuzzi hosed Kerkering and the Phillies by missing not one, not two, but three strike calls that would have ended the at bat, eventually leading to a Chapman single:

This is some of the most heinous work behind home plate I’ve ever seen. Kerkering threw seven pitches and six of them were strikes. SIX!

Last I checked you only needed three strikes to sit a batter down, but Mr. Cuzzi must feel otherwise. It’s insane because only maybe one of those pitches was marginal, but the data shows it clipped the corner and should’ve been a strike.

I feel for Kerkering here, too. Just look at the placement on those pitches. He was painting the corners touching high 90s, and all he got to show for it was a single that spelled the beginning of the end for the Phillies.

I have to commend him for his composure, I was reacting very differently by myself in my apartment at midnight. I usually love me some Phils After Dark, but this quickly turned into a horror show courtesy of the 34-year umpiring veteran.

If only there was some kind of system where these MLB umpires are graded on their performances. Maybe some sort of easy to read scorecard that shows exactly how good or bad an umpire was calling balls and strikes.

Oh, wait, that does exist, and Cuzzi’s Umpire Scorecard should tell you all you need to know about how badly he screwed the Phillies in San Francisco last night.

A +1.42 run differential in a two-run game is actually insane work. And it pretty much all game a

Sure, the Phils should have scored more runs. They could have prevented this from happening if the offense capitalized on some more opportunities.

It just blows that when the chips were down, the players didn’t have the opportunity to decide the game. Instead, Phil Cuzzi delivered one of the worst umpired at bats in my lifetime.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.
