VJ Edgecombe

VJ Edgecombe is already the best trash talker on 76ers roster

VJ Edgecombe hasn’t played a real NBA game yet, but he already sounds like he belongs in Philly.

During the Sixers’ Summer League matchup against the Utah Jazz, the No. 3 overall pick didn’t just light up the scoreboard — he lit up his opponent with Philly-grade trash talk. Caught on mic in the third quarter, Edgecombe barked at Utah guard Elijah Harkless:

“You worried about me? I’m the No. 3 pick … you sorry as f*.”**

Dog.

Forget the 28-point double-double. That line alone stamped his passport to Broad Street.

Elijah Harkless had just gotten bullied on the previous play — the broadcast crew even called it out — and clearly wasn’t having much luck staying in front of VJ. So what does the Sixers’ prized rookie do? He tells the 25-year-old undrafted guard exactly where he stands. In public. Loudly.

It’s not like Harkless is a nobody — he just won G League Most Improved Player. But on this night, he shot 1-for-5 from the field and got cooked repeatedly. Edgecombe let him know.

Philly fans love skill, sure, but what they really love is fire. And VJ Edgecombe brought a blowtorch.

Why the Sixers Chose VJ Over Ace Bailey? This.

The Sixers had options in the 2025 NBA Draft. Ace Bailey was on the board. Ranked higher on most mocks. Longer wingspan. Flashy dunks. But Daryl Morey and the front office went with Edgecombe. Why? Because they wanted someone who plays with purpose, plays both ends, and doesn’t back down from anyone.

That’s VJ Edgecombe.

He’s the type of guy who drops 28 points and then clowns you for even trying to guard him. Bailey, meanwhile, shot 3-of-13 in that same game and disappeared into the Salt Lake shadows.

This team needed a two-way player who won’t blink on the big stage. With Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George running the show, Edgecombe doesn’t need to be the guy. He just needs to be that guy — and so far, he is.

Morey called Edgecombe a potential All-Star with “winning qualities” and a “turbo-charged motor.” That’s GM speak for: this dude has Philly written all over him.

Trash talk like that isn’t just noise. It’s DNA. It’s what makes a player unafraid of the moment, unbothered by the pressure. The moment Elijah Harkless heard those words, Philly fans heard a future star.

So yeah, the Sixers may have lost the game. But they won the war. Because VJ Edgecombe isn’t just a baller. He’s a talker. A tone-setter. And dare I say it — already one of us.
