Daryl Morey explains why the Sixers brought back 39-year-old Kyle Lowry
Daryl Morey wants you to know the Sixers didn’t bring back Kyle Lowry just to fill a nostalgia quota.
In a statement following the team’s official announcement of Lowry’s return, Morey praised the 39-year-old’s championship pedigree and called him a “resource to everyone in the organization.”
That’s front office code for: this guy is basically a coach now.
Daryl Morey on bringing back Kyle Lowry:
“Kyle’s championship experience and Hall-of-Fame resume speaks for itself. He is a proven floor general with tremendous knowledge of the game that is a resource to everyone in the organization,” Morey said. “It’s only fitting that his 20th NBA season will be right here in Philadelphia, the city he calls home.”
Sixers bring back 39-year-old Kyle Lowry, hopefully to just hold a clipboard
Kyle Lowry, who joined the Sixers during the 2023-24 season after a buyout with the Hornets, played in 23 games down the stretch and averaged 8 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds. He re-signed last summer but battled injuries again and suited up just 35 times, averaging 4-2-3 in 2024-25.
Kyle Lowry is BACK with the Sixers for the 2025 NBA season
This return feels more ceremonial than strategic. Kyle Lowry wanted one more season, specifically in Philly, and he got it.
If everything goes to plan, he’ll serve as a mentor for young guards like Jared McCain and VJ Edgecombe, and ideally never be asked to play meaningful minutes.
If the Sixers are relying on Kyle Lowry to bail them out in 2026, something has gone terribly wrong.
So while the Sixers claim they’re building a younger, faster roster around Tyrese Maxey, they also have a guy born in the first Clinton administration returning to run it back one more time.
