Phillies players rip MLB over All-Star snubs: “It’s turning into the Savannah Bananas”

The Phillies are fuming. And honestly? Rightfully so.

After what should’ve been a proud All-Star selection week, the only Phillie heading to the Midsummer Classic is Kyle Schwarber — despite the team boasting two of the best starting pitchers in baseball in Cristopher Sánchez and Ranger Suárez. Both were left off the roster, and when the clubhouse found out Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski, who’s made five MLB starts, was named an All-Star, the reaction was swift, loud, and filled with expletives.

Phillies Call Out the Farce

Trea Turner didn’t hold back, calling it “f— terrible.” J.T. Realmuto said what everyone was thinking: “Those two are more deserving.” Even calm, calculated Schwarber called it “unfortunate.”

But the best quote? That came from Nick Castellanos, who summed it up better than anyone.

“It’s turning into the Savannah Bananas.”

Yep. MLB, the most tradition-obsessed league on Earth, is now being compared to a traveling circus that plays baseball in kilts and dances between pitches. And no disrespect to the Bananas, they’re fun. But the Phillies aren’t out here throwing 1.94 ERAs for TikTok views. They’re trying to win another pennant.

Suárez and Sánchez Deserved Better

Here’s the stat line:

  • Ranger Suárez: 1.94 ERA (lowest in the NL for pitchers with 80+ innings)
  • Cristopher Sánchez: 2.59 ERA, 107.2 IP, Top-6 in WAR among NL starters

But they were told the only way they’d get the nod is if they agreed to pitch in the All-Star Game. Both declined — smartly — citing health and the need to rest for the second half of the Phillies’ season.

Apparently, that disqualifies you now. You can have the numbers, the dominance, the consistency… but if you’re not throwing 103 mph for social media engagement, you’re out.

The Phillies aren’t just angry over principle. These snubs have financial and legacy consequences. Sánchez loses out on a contract bonus. Both lose another All-Star line on their eventual Hall of Fame or alumni day intros. Turner nailed it: “When they announce guys on the field for the 10-year reunion, it’s ‘he was an X-time All-Star.’”

But this year? It’s “he wasn’t available for TikTok, so we gave the spot to a guy with five starts.”

If Major League Baseball wants the Phillies’ respect, they’re going to have to start acting like a real league again. Otherwise, the Banana Ball comparisons are only going to keep flying — just like Misiorowski’s fastball and, apparently, basic standards of fairness.
