Philadelphia Union back on top and leading the Supporters Shield race with 11 matches left on the slate
After a two-game losing streak briefly ended their 13-match unbeaten run, the Union got right back to business with back-to-back wins over the Red Bulls and Montreal.
Saturday night’s win north of the border wasn’t exactly an instant classic, but it didn’t need to be. A scrappy clean-up goal and a beautiful set-piece strike were enough to dispatch last-place Montreal 2-0 and keep the Union in first place in the MLS standings.
Philadelphia Union: MLS Standings

That’s 46 points through 23 games, one point ahead of FC Cincinnati and on top of the Supporters’ Shield race with just 11 games left.
Here’s how the rest of the schedule shakes out for the Union
- at Houston
- vs Colorado
- vs Toronto
- at Red Bull
- vs Chicago
- at Cincinnati
- international break
- at Vancouver
- vs New England
- at DC
- vs NYC
- international break
- at Charlotte
Five of those opponents (Houston, DC, Toronto, New England, and Chicago) are currently below the playoff line. Four more (Colorado, Red Bull, NYC, and Charlotte) are hovering around mid-table.
Basically, that means if the Union keep handling their business through August, the two-game gauntlet against Cincinnati and Vancouver will likely decide everything. Cincinnati is breathing down Philly’s neck, and Vancouver is the second-best team in the West.
The good news is that the Union have a clear runway. They aren’t in the Leagues Cup this year and the only outside distraction is the rescheduled US Open Cup quarterfinal on August 13. If they win that, they’ll have a semifinal and possibly a final down the line but otherwise, it’s full steam ahead toward the Shield.
Cincy still has to play Nashville and Miami. Nashville plays Miami and San Diego. And Messi and the Herons have three games in hand, but they’re still eight points back and would need a huge win streak and for Philly to stumble to get back into the race.
Miami’s schedule isn’t doing them any favors either with matchups against Seattle, Cincy, and Nashville on deck.
The Union control their own destiny.
If they take care of business, they might just lift a trophy this fall because right now, it’s theirs to lose.
