Eagles make a flurry of roster moves as training camp gets underway
The Eagles are back, baby — and with training camp officially underway, the front office wasted no time getting a head start on the roster churn.
On Day 1 of camp, the Eagles signed a pair of defensive linemen and cut two players who, let’s be honest, weren’t exactly locks to make the roster anyway. These aren’t blockbuster moves, but they’re the kind of depth tweaks that matter come September.
Eagles Add Vet Pass Rusher and UFL Standout
Let’s start with the signings. The headliner is Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, a veteran edge rusher entering his eighth NFL season. He’s played for the Rams, Texans, and Browns and has quietly put together solid numbers as a rotational guy — 5 sacks in 2022, 4.5 in 2023. He’s not going to steal anyone’s thunder, but Okoronkwo has the kind of juice off the edge that could prove valuable if the Eagles deal with any injuries up front.
They also brought in Jacob Sykes, a 2023 UDFA who played in the UFL with the San Antonio Brahmas. He had 11 tackles and a sack — not eye-popping numbers, but enough to get a camp invite. He’s your classic “long shot to make the 53, but hey, anything can happen” kind of guy.
Eagles Cut Ties with RB Lew Nichols, EDGE KJ Henry
In order to make room, the Eagles waived RB Lew Nichols, a thick, bruising back who’s been floating around the bottom of the depth chart the last two years. He put up monster stats in college at Central Michigan but never quite translated that into NFL production. His 15 carries for 30 yards last preseason didn’t help his case.
More notably, KJ Henry is gone again. The former fifth-round pick was a five-star recruit coming out of high school, but his NFL career has been a game of hot potato. He’s bounced from Washington to Cincinnati to Dallas and finally landed on the Eagles’ practice squad last season after Brandon Graham went down. Henry flashed a bit — 1.5 sacks, a few tackles — but with the room getting crowded again, he’s back on the street.
Eagles Already Tweaking the Trenches
These aren’t flashy moves, but they speak volumes about how the Eagles operate. Building a Super Bowl contender isn’t just about stars — it’s about having reliable guys at the bottom of the roster who can step up when needed. Okoronkwo could end up being one of those guys. And if not? There’ll be 10 more moves just like this before camp ends.
Stay locked in, because this is only the beginning of the Eagles’ summer shakeup. Pads haven’t even popped yet, and we’re already playing musical chairs with the edge rushers. You love to see it.
