The Savannah Bananas took over Citizens Bank Park on Saturday night and it was just as bizarre, yet incredible as you could imagine.
Side Note: Does anyone else sing that Gwen Stefani song when trying to spell banana? Just me? Alright. Whatever.
Honestly, much like attempting to spell the word itself, I don’t really get the Savannah Bananas.
I guess they are this generations version of the Harlem Globetrotters? Whatever. It’s not for me but that’s totally fine. I can acknowledge they’re selling out football stadiums and doing better engagement than 75% of Major League Baseball, so it’s blatantly obvious they’re a viral marketing machine.
Phillies players rip MLB over All-Star snubs: “It’s turning into the Savannah Bananas”
Still, I personally don’t need a baseball game where someone’s hitting a home run while on fire, doing the worm past third base, and finishing it off with a saxophone solo. If that’s your cup of tea then by all means, drink it.
Regardless of one man’s opinion, the product has been thriving.
The latest example was the Savannah Bananas doing their thing last night in front of a sold out crowd at Citizens Bank Park.
At one point, Joey Chestnut was in right field having a donut eating contest while the game was happening. There was also a seven-foot tall banana walking around with a dry erase board that said “Re-Sign Schwarber” while there were players doing backflips and Shane Victorino stepping to the plate.
As Selfy so eloquently put it, “This is America.”
Shane Victorino was back at The Bank
Big Dom even made an appearance
Banana Baller Ryan Cox made history
The Savannah Bananas are back in action for Round 2 today at 3PM
As for the Phillies…
The Phillies are up in the Bronx with Zack Wheeler on the mound, looking to sweep the New York Yankees after destroying them in games one and two. They return to Citizens Bank Park on August 1st after a road series against Chicago White Sox this week.
