Phillies win series in the Bronx as the MLB Trade Deadline takes center stage
The Phillies took two of three from the Yankees this weekend thanks to an offensive explosion, but Sunday’s loss came with the non-so-subtle reminder that this team isn’t quite complete… yet.
A 21-run outburst in the first two games gave Philly a shot at the sweep, but Zack Wheeler’s latest stumble, his second in three starts, slammed the brakes on that momentum. The 4-3 loss leaves the Phils at 60-45, one and a half games behind the Mets in the NL East, with the postseason race starting to tighten.
And now… the clock ticks for Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies
The MLB trade deadline looms just three days away, and if the Phillies are serious about a World Series run, Dave Dombrowski has work to do. This team, as it’s built right now is not quite enough.
The Phillies desperately need a bat in the outfield. They need at least one, probably two, trustworthy bullpen arms and they can’t wait until it’s too late to find out what they could’ve been.
Here Comes Luis Robert Jr.?
The Phillies are heading to Chicago next to face the White Sox and conveniently, one of their top rumored trade targets, Luis Robert Jr.
The fit is obvious.
Luis Robert Jr. hits for power, plays a strong center field, and would instantly stabilize an outfield still being pieced together with duct tape. If the White Sox are open to dealing him, the Phillies should be all-in, even if the cost is steep.
Much Needed Upgrade(s) to the Bullpen
As for the bullpen, you name any top arm that’s expected to be on the market and the Phillies have been linked to them. From Emmanuel Clase and Mason Miller, to David Bednar and Kyle Finnegan, now it’s become a question of how far Dombrowski is willing to go and what he’s willing to part ways with to make sure the Phillies get their guy.
Dombrowski will make a move but the urgency feels more real this year. This is a veteran team with an open window. If you’re going for it, go for it.
Current Phillies Heating Up at the Perfect Time:
We’re cooking heading into the Dog Days of August.
- Kyle Schwarber: .282/.371/.769 in July. 11 bombs. His 1,000th career hit came on a moonshot Friday night.
- Bryce Harper: .296/.390/.676, 6 HRs. Heating up just in time.
- Trea Turner: .300 average, getting on base and swiping bags.
- JT Realmuto: .388 AVG, slugging .582 in the month.
JT Realmuto and Bryce picking up the pace could be the difference between a wildcard run and a World Series push. Even Castellanos, despite an ugly .219 July average, hit a bomb Sunday and seems to be finding rhythm.
The concern has always been depth. Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh, Max Kepler, and Johan Rojas have all been underwhelming offensively. If they’re not stepping up, the top half of the order has to carry this team if they have any shot at competing in October and as we all know, that has been pretty unreliable in year’s past.
No, Zack Wheeler isn’t a cause for concern
Zack Wheeler has been weird lately.
After opening Sunday with a 5-pitch inning and some laughs thanks to Schwarber’s goofy catch in left, he completely unraveled in the second. He hit two batters, gave up a double to Ryan McMahon, and surrendered four runs that held up for the Yankees. His line: 5.2 IP, 4 ER, 3 HBP.
That’s now two poor outings in his last three, which isn’t what you want to see from your ace heading into the most important stretch of the year. Not panic time, but definitely a monitor situation.
The Starting Rotation Carousel
Aaron Nola begins a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will throw around 60 pitches. If all goes well, he could return soon and we should all be praying that will shuffle the whole deck.
A healthy Nola returning to form gives the Phillies options. If Nola can return to form, then you’re obviously sending Taijuan Walker to the bullpen. It would also allow the Phillies to book Jesús Luzardo a trip to the ‘pen come October.
It doesn’t solve the bullpen issues, but it might ease the burden. Still, they’ll need outside help too.
Finally: Dick Allen Gets His Due
A long-overdue moment happened in Cooperstown this weekend. Dick Allen, the former Phillies slugger, was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame posthumously. His widow, Willa, accepted the honor on his behalf in an emotional speech.
“Thank you for honoring Dick,” she said. “Thank you for believing in him. And thank you for finally bringing him home.”
It was a powerful tribute to a player who should’ve been in decades ago.
Up Next for the Phillies
The Phillies head to Chicago to face the White Sox and scout Luis Robert Jr. in real time. Cristopher Sánchez takes the mound Monday night against Davis Martin. From there, it’s definitely all eyes on the trade deadline. The Phillies are good but the next four days will determine if they’re great.
