Phillies drop series opener to White Sox 6-2, Cristopher Sánchez streak snapped
Cristopher Sánchez had been nearly untouchable for the past month, but that came to a halt Monday night on the South Side of Chicago. The Phillies fell flat in their series opener against the White Sox, losing 6-2 behind a rare off-night from their rising lefty and a quiet effort from the offense.
Luis Robert Jr. and Colson Montgomery both took Sánchez deep for two-run shots, handing the White Sox all they needed to take Game 1. The loss dropped the Phillies to 2-2 on their six-game road trip, with two more to go before the trade deadline hits.

Cristopher Sánchez’s Streak Ends
It was Sánchez’s first loss since June 8, snapping a seven-start unbeaten run where he posted a 1.40 ERA. The 27-year-old came in red-hot but gave up four earned runs and seven hits over 6.2 innings, including two homers, the first time he’d allowed a long ball to a lefty batter all year.
Not the night Sánchez was hoping for, especially against one of the worst teams in baseball.
The big blow came in the bottom of the third, just after Bryce Harper gave the Phils a 2-0 lead with a two-run double. Montgomery answered immediately with a 395-foot shot to right to tie things up, then Luis Robert Jr followed with a blast of his own in the fourth to flip the game.

Bryce Harper’s Lone Highlight
Bryce Harper stayed hot with two hits and two RBI, and continues to swing it well on this road trip. Outside of Harp, the Phillies didn’t have much going with just six hits total and 11 strikeouts as a team.
Brandon Marsh had two knocks, and Kyle Schwarber walked three times, but the middle of the order didn’t show up behind Harper. With the trade deadline just days away, this lineup’s inconsistencies are a loud reminder of what might be needed, especially in the outfield.
Meanwhile, the White Sox…
The same White Sox who were historically bad in 2024 are now 7-3 since the All-Star break and only need two more wins to match their win total from last year (41-121). It’s still the worst roster in the league on paper, but you wouldn’t know it by watching them Monday night.
Have I mentioned Luis Robert Jr?
Game Notes:
- Lenyn Sosa went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
- Davis Martin, who came in 2-8, held the Phillies to two runs on six hits and struck out seven across 5.2 innings for his first win in over two months.
- Colson Montgomery has four homers in his last six games — the kid can swing it.
- The Phillies struck out 11 times as a team.
Up Next
The Phillies turn to Jesús Luzardo (8-5, 4.58 ERA) in Game 2, while the White Sox send out Jonathan Cannon (4-7, 4.48 ERA). Luzardo’s been hit-or-miss lately, but the Phillies will need him to steady things if they want to keep pace in the NL East and avoid another ugly loss to a team they should be beating.
First pitch from Chicago is set for 7:40 p.m. ET.
