Jakorian Bennett Howie Heist

The Howie Heist: Eagles trade for Jakorian Bennett, who could very well be the starter opposite of Quinyon Mitchell this season

The Philadelphia Eagles just might have landed their starting CB2 for the price of a backup interior lineman. Thomas Booker IV was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for 24-year-old cornerback Jakorian Bennett and the more you dig into the numbers, the more it feels like Howie Roseman pulled off a quiet heist.

Jakorian Bennett is a dawg

Jakorian Bennett, a 2023 fourth-round pick (No. 104 overall), was selected just one pick before the Eagles took Kelee Ringo at No. 105 in the 2023 NFL Draft. The move addresses a glaring need to pair an outside cornerback to pair with Quinyon Mitchell and it only cost them a depth piece on the interior line.

Another Howie Heist in August. I love that.

Check out Jakorian Bennett

  • 0 touchdowns allowed in 294 coverage snaps last year
  • 18 catches allowed on 37 targets
  • 176 yards allowed (2nd-fewest among CBs with 450+ snaps)
  • 7 pass breakups
  • 62.4 opposing QB rating
  • Only 24 years old

Those are real numbers. Bennett didn’t just hang around on the depth chart last year. He quite literally locked up his assignments when on the field. If he stays healthy (shoulder issues held him back a bit in Vegas), there’s no reason he shouldn’t be in consideration to start Week 1 in Philadelphia.

Jakorian Bennett brings speed, physicality, and sharp instincts in man coverage. The only downside I’ve seen is that he sometimes struggles in the run game. How much of that had to do with his shoulder surgery is a fair question, but it’s worth noting that Bennett played through a labrum tear before deciding on surgery.

Now fully healthy, Bennett told reporters in June that this is the best he’s felt since college. He found himself buried on the Raiders’ depth chart behind Eric Stokes, rookie Darien Porter so the writing was somewhat on the wall and Vegas cut bait.

Their loss. Our gain. If Vic Fangio schemes it the right way and relies on his already-strong linebackers, Bennett can focus on being a weapon in the secondary.

The Eagles’ young cornerback room now looks like this:

  • LCB: Quinyon Mitchell, Eli Ricks, Tariq Castro-Fields
  • RCB: Kelee Ringo, Jakorian Bennett, Adoree’ Jackson, Parry Nickerson
  • NB: Cooper DeJean, Mac McWilliams, A.J. Woods, Brandon Johnson

That’s a loaded room full of athletic freaks under the age of 25. If the Raiders gave up on Jakorian Bennett too early, that’s on them. The Eagles just took advantage, and it could pay off in a big way.
