Max Kepler Phillies Interview

Max Kepler gave one heck of an interview after the Phillies beat the Orioles 5-0

Max Kepler went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double in last night’s 5-0 win over the Orioles but the most talked-about moment came after the game, not during it.

Max Kepler, much to the dismay of Phillies fans, was in the starting lineup last night and smoked a two-run homer in the second. He added a double later in the game and scored on a Bryson Stott RBI triple in the fourth.

Max Kepler 2-Run Home Run

Walker shoves, Brandon Marsh and Max Kepler go yard as Phillies blank Orioles 5-0

After reading the comments on social media last night, you’d think that Max Kepler is next up for a Netflix special and has a scheduled Trea Turner Treatment in the near future.

And look, I get it, all things considered, Kepler seems like a pretty chill dude.

But no, I don’t feel “sorry” for Max Kepler.

He’s a professional baseball player and hasn’t lived up to the expectations of this fanbase and organization. I just appreciate a guy that’s going to continue to battle. He’s probably heading to a full time bench role sooner than later but as long as he’s grinding to make the most of any opportunity, I can respect that.

Kepler even admitted to reporters afterward that he’s an over-thinker and that the boos get to him but he also said he loves that Phillies fans show up every game, no matter what. Say what you want about the guy, but that’s an honest, self-aware answer.

Again, let’s not pretend this was some grand revelation that makes everyone forget what’s been happening on the field. Yes, that interview showed a more human side of a Major League Baseball player.

Yes, the fans here are relentless and emotional and expect excellence. Once the cameras go away and all I’ve got is the box score, I’m reminded that Max Kepler hadn’t recorded two extra-base hits in a game since March 31st.

It’s August 6th. He’s getting paid what… $10 million this year? So no, I definitely do not feel sorry for Max Kepler.

That’s not to say I’m rooting against him. Quite the opposite. I actually hope he can ride this little breakout and string together some productive at-bats down the stretch.

Lord knows this team could use another bat. Sympathy however, is reserved for the guys grinding through Triple-A bus rides and minor-league salaries, not for a veteran with a seven-figure deal and a .216 average.

Shoutout Max Kepler though, he was hot on and off the field last night

Max Kepler back on the bench today

Rob Thomson sticks to his promise and has Kepler and Marsh on the bench today in the series finale vs the O’s. Sosa will be at second for Bryson Stott, Otto Kemp is at third, and Harrison Bader is back in centerfield. Yes, somehow Weston Wilson is still getting playing time with the Phillies and in left field.

Anyways, Kepler’s time in Philly might already be on borrowed time. Just don’t ask me to cry about it.
