Max Kepler clutches up, Phillies edge Rangers 3-2
The Phillies didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard Saturday night, but they didn’t need to. Max Kepler’s two-run double in the seventh was all it took to sink Jacob deGrom and give Philly a 3-2 win in Arlington, locking up a series victory over the defending champs.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, Brandon Marsh got things moving with a one-out single, Harrison Bader worked a walk, and Max Kepler smoked a liner into the right-field corner to flip the lead. Bryson Stott added a clutch RBI knock off reliever Danny Coulombe to make it 3-1, giving the Phillies just enough cushion to hold off Texas.
The Max Kepler Clutch UP
Jesús Luzardo was solid again, going six innings and giving up only a first-inning RBI single to Wyatt Langford. He didn’t have his nastiest stuff but still kept the Rangers in check, striking out four with just one walk.
The bullpen did its job, too and Jhoan Duran continues to look like an absolute steal. The fireballer slammed the door in the ninth for his third save in as many tries since coming over at the deadline, and his 19th overall this season.
Bryson Stott Lord Have Mercy
DeGrom, for his part, looked better than he has in weeks, but the loss still stings. It’s his third straight defeat, something he hasn’t done since early 2019, and the Phillies handed it to him in his own building.
Up Next: Zack Wheeler takes the mound Sunday looking for his 10th win of the season and a clean sweep in Texas. Patrick Corbin gets the ball for the Rangers, and if Wheeler’s on, Philly could be heading home with a perfect weekend.
