Phillies sleepwalk in DC, lose 2-0 to the lowly Nationals

Losing games in August is one thing. Losing games to the Nationals, the basement-dwelling Nationals, is another. That’s exactly what the Phillies did Saturday, rolling over 2–0 in Washington as Cade Cavalli picked up his first career MLB win.

The Cade Cavalli Story

This wasn’t some grizzled vet carving them up. It was a guy who’s barely pitched in the majors since debuting in 2022. Cavalli had Tommy John surgery in 2023, didn’t return until this month, and was still looking for his first big-league win. Enter the Phillies, the perfect slump-busting opponent.

Cavalli threw seven shutout innings, scattered seven hits, struck out five, and walked off to a standing ovation while the Phillies looked like they were still in bed.

Wasted Chances Everywhere

The Phils had traffic with seven hits, multiple runners on base but nothing to show for it. Trea Turner went 3-for-4, but everyone else? Nothing but grounders and empty at-bats.

The backbreaker came in the fourth inning with runners on the corners and one out. Max Kepler rolled into a double play. Rally dead, momentum gone.

By the time James Wood cracked a two-run double off Taijuan Walker in the fifth, the game felt over.

Phillies Offense Goes Missing (Again)

That’s now the eighth shutout of the season for Philadelphia and their fourth loss in five games. For a lineup that’s supposed to be one of the best in baseball, that’s unacceptable. Too many wasted at-bats, too much reliance on the long ball, and absolutely no killer instinct against teams they should bury.

Walker wasn’t great but he wasn’t bad — two runs across 6 2/3 should be enough for this lineup. Instead, it’s another L against the bottom of the division.

Up Next for the Phillies

Aaron Nola returns from the IL on Sunday. He hasn’t pitched since May, and honestly, the Phillies desperately need him to look like the old Nola. They’ll face Mitchell Parker as they try to salvage a series split and stop the bleeding.

This offense needs to wake up before the slump turns into something bigger.
