Kyle Tucker Booed at Wrigley

WATCH: Kyle Tucker gets booed at Wrigley Field for not hustling

Chicago Cubs fans got their first taste of the full Kyle Tucker Experience on Sunday and they weren’t exactly thrilled.

With the Cubs trailing the Pirates 3-2 in the sixth inning, Tucker rolled a weak grounder to the right side. Instead of hustling down the line, he took a few half-hearted steps out of the box before calling it quits. Wrigley Field noticed, and the boos rained down.

Now, in fairness, Tucker wasn’t beating that ball out no matter what. But that’s not the point. Cubs fans demand effort, and when you jog your way into an easy out during a tight game, you’re going to hear about it.

The Kyle Tucker Numbers Don’t Tell the Whole Story

On paper, Tucker’s first season in Chicago doesn’t look bad. He’s hitting .265 with 18 homers, 62 RBIs, and 25 steals, second only to Pete Crow-Armstrong in WAR.

Since the All-Star break? He’s been ice cold, slashing just .198. That kind of second-half slump combined with visible lack of hustle is the fastest way to lose a fanbase.

Kyle Tucker Free Agency

The Cubs did rally to win 4-3 and sit at a strong 70-53, but Tucker’s situation looms large. Chicago gave up big assets to pry him away from Houston, and with free agency looming after 2025, his price tag is rumored to be pushing $600 million. Unless the Cubs are willing to go all in, this could wind up being an expensive one-year rental.

If you’re trying to convince Chicago to back up the Brinks truck for you, dogging it on routine grounders isn’t the best strategy. Cubs fans will forgive slumps. They won’t forgive looking like you don’t care.
