Trea Turner Kyle Schwarber Phillies Mariners Sweep

Trea Turner notches 5 hits, Kyle Schwarber crushes No. 45, Phillies break out the brooms with sweep of Mariners

The Phillies are rolling, and the Mariners just got steamrolled out of Citizens Bank Park.

Trea Turner played whack-a-mole with Seattle’s pitching staff, he racked up five hits (a triple and four singles) with two RBI. That’s now six multi-hit games in his last seven.

Remember when the Trea Turner panic button was a thing in 2023?

I think it’s safe to say that we’ve come a long way. Turner has a .303 batting average with 158 hits, 13 home runs, 59 RBIs and 87 runs scored in 125 games this season. We still have six weeks to go before Red October.

Kyle Schwarber, meanwhile, decided to make the sweep official. He launched his 45th homer of the year, tops in the National League, and drove in five runs to push his MLB-leading RBI total to 109, already a new career high. With 35 games still left, Schwarber might just drag himself into Judge/Olson territory when it’s all said and done.

Jesus Luzardo Dominates, Bats Stay Hot

Jesús Luzardo was nails, striking out 12 over six innings while allowing just three hits and one run. The Phillies’ offense made sure that was more than enough, posting 11 runs on 17 hits. Add that to the rest of the series, and you’ve got 29 runs and 48 hits across three games, their best three-game stretch since 2007.

Bryson Stott chipped in three hits and two RBI, while Max Kepler kept his hot streak alive with three hits of his own, including a homer.

The Jose Alvarado Return

One of the loudest moments of the afternoon came when José Alvarado jogged in from the bullpen. Making his first appearance since serving an 80-game PED suspension, he got a standing ovation from the Philly faithful, then punched out Cal Raleigh (who leads all of baseball in homers with 47) to close a perfect eighth inning.

For a bullpen that’s been shaky, getting Alvarado back in the mix feels huge. I have my own opinions on the standing ovation and all of the celebration surrounding Alvarado’s return but that’ll need it’s own post.

The Sweep, The Stakes

The Phillies have now won four straight, dusting off a Seattle team that looks completely lost. Julio Rodríguez and Eugenio Suárez hit solo shots, but that was the extent of Seattle’s offense.

The Phillies now turn their attention to a three-game set against the Nationals starting Friday, with Taijuan Walker set to take the ball. At this rate, Turner and Schwarber aren’t just carrying the offense, they’re bludgeoning teams into submission.
