SEPTA GM admits Eagles Home Opener will be a disaster without Sports Express services
If you thought SEPTA’s “doomsday budget” was just some bureaucratic nonsense, think again. The General Manager flat-out admitted the Eagles’ home opener at the Linc is going to be a nightmare and it’s all because SEPTA is pulling the plug on the Sports Express trains.
SEPTA GM said the Eagles Home Opener will be chaotic… no shit lol
“No extra express coupled with 20% less regular trips. Normally stage 10 extras at NRG to run for the hour after the game, will only have 3-4 trains during that time per the regular schedule. For a night game, that could be a bigger issue because we’ll have a hard stop for service a little after midnight where normally we run past the schedule to get crowds out as needed. So if we normally take about 16,000 people postgame, we’re looking at only about 4,000 after the opener.”
Cool. Thanks, SEPTA:
- Normally: 16,000 fans get home postgame.
- This year: only about 4,000 will.
- Everyone else? Stuck outside the stadium, scrambling for Ubers, or hoofing it back to Broad Street.

SEPTA approves Doomsday Budget, plans to slash service and kill Sports Express >>
SEPTA operating at 25% means the South Philly Sports Complex is Screwed
The Sports Express was the one thing SEPTA did right on game day. It moved massive crowds quickly and kept the South Philly traffic mess somewhat manageable. Without it, the opener turns into a logistical disaster.
A night game? Forget it. Trains stop running after midnight, so if you’re still celebrating when the clock hits zero, you may literally be stranded.
“We understand that these measures will cause great hardship for our riders and for the city and Southeastern region as a whole…”
No kidding, SEPTA.
Starting August 24, Philly commuters are going to feel it. Service cuts hit first. A fare hike of 21.5% kicks in September 1, raising the base bus and metro fare to $2.90. On January 1, it gets even worse. Five Regional Rail lines vanish, and all rail shuts down after 9 p.m.
No more Sports Express means game days at the stadiums are going to become a complete clusterfuck.
Who’s to Blame?
It’s the same old Harrisburg dysfunction. SEPTA says they’re out of money, and the state legislature hasn’t stepped up with funding.
It all stems from the state’s failure (so far) to pass meaningful transit funding. The House passed a $300 million plan, but the Republican-controlled Senate hasn’t moved on it. Surprise surprise. Republicans from rural counties, who don’t use mass transit and never will, want road and bridge money instead.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia, where the overwhelming bulk of transit ridership lives, gets told to eat dirt. It’s the same nonsense every year. Philly subsidizes the rest of the state, and in return we get crumbling infrastructure, shrinking bus schedules, and now the complete collapse of our transit system.
Eagles fans: plan for chaos.
- Get to the game early.
- Expect gridlock after.
- Maybe start the walk home before the final whistle.
This is what happens when nobody in charge actually rides the thing they’re deciding on.

How does reducing ridership by stranding 12000 paying customers help SEPTA’s financial situation?
