Phillies trim Magic Number after win over Braves and a Mets loss to Marlins
The Phillies are closing in on their second straight NL East crown, and Saturday night’s 3-2 win over the Braves, combined with the Mets coughing up another one to the Marlins, dropped the magic number down to 21.
It’s been 14 years since the Phillies last repeated as division champs (2007–11), but with just a month left, The Fightins are in full control of the race.

The State of the Race
The Phillies sit at 79-57, six games up on the Mets (73-63). While getting swept by the Mets gave them life, the Phillies has been red-hot in August while New York continues to stink up the race against everyone but them.
Regardless, it’s becoming the perfect storm to give the Phils breathing room heading into the final 26 games. They’ll clinch a playoff berth well before they lock up the NL East, but winning the division is the difference between opening October at home or grinding through a Wild Card series on the road.
Plus, if The Fightins can edge out the Dodgers for the No. 2 seed, that’s a first round bye and huge leg up in the postseason.

Circle that Sept. 8-11 home series against the Mets.
If New York can hang around long enough, that series could very well be their last shot to make it interesting. More likely, it’s the Phillies chance to bury them for good.
The Fightins haven’t won back-to-back NL East titles since the Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Chase Utley era. With Turner, Harper, Schwarber, and now Cristopher Sánchez leading the way now, this team has every chance to revive that dynasty feel and carry it straight into another Red October.
