Ben Griffin leads U.S. Ryder Cup Team field heading into the weekend at the Procore Championship
Ben Griffin walked into Napa this week joking that he was “the best player on the Ryder Cup team.” Two days later, it doesn’t sound much like a joke anymore.
The U.S. captain’s pick followed up his opening 64 with a bogey-free 66 on Friday at Silverado Resort, good enough to take the solo lead after the morning wave at the Procore Championship.
That’s 14-under through two rounds, and Griffin is looking every bit like a guy who belongs on the Ryder Cup stage at Bethpage Black later this month.
Ben Griffin first 2 rounds in Napa:
Griffin’s week started with a clutch 17-footer to save par on his final hole Thursday. On Friday, he rode that momentum by hitting 16 greens in regulation, ranking third in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach. He torched the three par-5s, added a 21-foot make on 17, and stuck approaches inside 10 feet on two more birdie holes.

This continues what’s quietly been one of the better runs of his young career. After missing cuts at the John Deere and The Open, Griffin rattled off four straight top-12 finishes starting with the Wyndham.
He picked up his first career TOUR win at the Zurich Classic and made the TOUR Championship for the first time. Now he’s playing like he’s got nothing to lose.
“If anything, I’m a little bit more free compared to the Playoffs,” Griffin said. “I’ve really got nothing to lose this week.”
Ryder Cup teammates making noise
He’s not alone. Ryder Cup teammates Russell Henley (11-under) and J.J. Spaun (9-under) are right behind him after a pair of 68s. Scottie Scheffler bounced back from a rare off day with a 68 of his own to sit at 6-under.
Cameron Young dropped 101 feet of putts to post 67, while Collin Morikawa’s putter switch looks solid after another 68.
Overall, the 10 U.S. players in the field shaved nine strokes collectively from their first-round scores. That’s the kind of momentum you want to see building with Europe’s team tuning up at Wentworth.

36 holes to go for Ben Griffin
Ben Griffin’s lead is slim, but the confidence is real. For a guy who entered the year just hoping to prove he belonged, he’s now playing with a freedom that could make him one of the sneaky storylines at Bethpage.
The Ryder Cup spotlight is coming, but at least for right now, Ben Griffin is soaking up Napa Valley and proving that when he said he was the best player on the U.S. squad, he might not have been kidding.
(He was definitely kidding)
