Sixers officially roll out throwback court to keep fans on the hook but Embiid playing basketball with no brace on his knee might have done the trick already
The Sixers are dipping back into the nostalgia bag, and honestly, it feels like a last-ditch effort to keep the fanbase from completely checking out.
On September 18, the team rolled out the first images of their early 2000s throwback court, the one that’s meant to honor Allen Iverson’s MVP season in 2001. Fourteen games this year will get the old-school treatment, starting November 8 against the Raptors and wrapping April 12 against the Bucks.

The design itself is straight out of the AI era. It’s missing the basketball comets, which was arguably the best part of the original court but there’s no doubt the all the black-and-red attitude that screams early-2000s Philly.
It’s nice, don’t get me wrong, but slapping a retro coat of paint on the hardwood isn’t suddenly going to erase years of second-round heartbreak.
What is working, though, is the fact that Joel Embiid is out here looking like a damn SNACK in offseason runs, hooping without a knee brace and moving smoother than he has in years.
Those clips alone have done more to inject hope into this fanbase than any graphic designer could. You can’t market vibes, but you sure as hell can market a healthy, motivated Embiid.
So yeah, the throwback court will get the crowd hyped. Fans will buy in because AI nostalgia is bulletproof. For me, it’s Embiid’s refreshed look.
Our guy is slimmed down, braceless, and locked in, so that has me thinking this might not just be another empty nostalgia play. This might actually be the year they break through.
