Bernie Parent Passes 80

Flyers legend Bernie Parent, the goalie who gave Philadelphia it’s first taste of glory, passes at 80

Philadelphia lost a legend on Sunday. Bernie Parent, the man who strapped on the mask and turned the Flyers into Stanley Cup champions, passed away at 80 years old.

Parent wasn’t just a goalie; he was the goalie. The backbone of the Broad Street Bullies. The guy who shut the door on everyone from Bobby Orr’s Bruins to the upstart Sabres. The man who won back-to-back Vezinas, back-to-back Conn Smythes, and most importantly, back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975.

RIP Bernie Parent

Bernie Parent didn’t just win hockey games. He helped put Philadelphia on the map as a hockey city. Fans had a saying back then: “Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parent.” That wasn’t just a clever sign in the Spectrum. It was the truth.

When Bobby Clarke and Parent skated off with the Cup in ’74, surrounded by thousands of fans who stormed the ice, it was the beginning of a love affair between Philly and hockey that never really ended.

Bernie Parent’s impact didn’t stop when he hung up the pads.

He stayed here, always around the Flyers, always with the fans. Whether he was shaking hands in the concourse, or working with the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation to get kids into the game, Bernie was more than a Hall of Famer—he was a Philly lifer. Everyone who met him walked away with a story, and usually a smile.

Even at 66, when the Flyers held the Winter Classic Alumni Game at Citizens Bank Park in 2012, Bernie couldn’t resist getting back in net one last time. He faced down Rangers alumni, made a couple big saves, and then walked off to a standing ovation from 45,000 strong. It wasn’t about the saves that day, it was about what he meant.

Bernie Parent was the heartbeat of the Flyers’ only two Stanley Cups, the face of the franchise at its peak, and one of the most beloved athletes Philadelphia has ever had. He gave this city memories, championships, and an identity.

And he summed it all up with a phrase he loved to repeat: “It’s a beautiful thing.”

Rest easy, Bernie. You’ll always be Philly’s goalie.
