Nick Sirianni responds to rumor Jalen Hurts overtook play calling in 2nd half of Eagles vs. Rams

The Monday following a Philadelphia Eagles game, win lose, or draw (winning most of time), is always one we all turn to head coach Nick Sirianni for answers or really just a general response to anything and everything.

With that said, this Sunday, was another frustratingly slow start from the Eagles’ offense. At this point, it feels like Groundhog Day watching them stumble through first halves before finally waking up after halftime.

After yesterday’s sideline moment between Jalen Hurts and Kevin Patullo, the rumor mill fired up, as everyone questioned whether or not Jalen Hurts actually took over play calling in the second half.

AJ Brown calls out Kevin Patullo following Jalen Hurts sideline moment >>

If you watched, you could see why people thought that. The offense went from a Prius barely merging onto the highway to a Ferrari blowing past everyone in the fast lane. Hurts was letting it rip to his playmakers, and suddenly the Eagles looked like the juggernaut we’ve been waiting to see.

Nick Sirianni responds to the rumor

Do I buy that Hurts completely took over the headset?

Honestly, no. I think that’s a little overblown.

This isn’t Madden where the QB just hijacks the controller. It’s a joint effort, with Jalen Hurts, Nick Sirianni, and Kevin Patullo all in the mix. Based on Sirianni’s press conference, he didn’t exactly sound ready to admit this team has been “conservative” in the first half, so maybe he’s got his fingerprints on this too.

My guess is that Sirianni knows damn well that the first half against the Rams was unacceptable. Adjustments were made. Everyone voiced their frustrations and how to fix it. That happened. Onwards.

The Bigger Point: A Step in the Right Direction

The second half against the Rams looked like the offense we’ve all been begging for. Points on the board with a dynamic attack where AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith were finally unleashed. Adding that freed up Hurts and the running game to capitalize and just like that, we have a revamped, winning formula.

It makes sense. Last year, the Eagles ran the ball to set up the pass. This year? It looks like they may need to throw to open up the run game. Luckily for the Eagles, when you have Hurts, Brown, Smith, Goedert, it’s a nightmare for defenses so making the flip in scheme should be easy.

Yesterday was a step in the right direction. Build on it, lean into what works, and let your stars shine. Because when this offense looks like it did in the second half against the Rams? Nobody in the league is stopping them.
