Phillies eliminate Marlins from Wild Card contention with 1-0 win in South Philly
The Phillies didn’t need another home run derby. One run was more than enough to eliminate the Miami Marlins from playoff contention Thursday night in South Philly.
Walker Buehler, who’s somehow gone from “minor-league flier” to “automatic win machine,” threw five scoreless innings. He’s now 3-0 in three appearances with the Phillies. Not bad for a guy who was hanging around on August 31 looking for a shot.
Five Scoreless from Walker Buehler
Alec Bohm drove in the only run of the night with a first-inning groundout, and from there it was up to the pitching staff.
Taijuan Walker handled the middle innings, stranding two runners in the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts, Matt Strahm got through the eighth, and after a rain delay, 40-year-old David Robertson jogged in to lock down the save. Ballgame. Season over for Miami.
The Phillies, meanwhile, are in full postseason tune-up mode. They clinched a first-round bye Wednesday with that absurd eight-homer game, and now they’re just sharpening the edges before October.
Aaron Nola faces Joe Ryan and the Twins to kick off the final series of the regular season. As for Miami, their year ends the same way it always seems to—with someone else doing the celebrating.
