Mets Eliminated

The Mets Are Dead. Long Live the Collapse.

Pop the champagne, Philadelphia. The Mets have officially Mets’d themselves right out of October baseball and honestly, it couldn’t have happened to a better organization.

They strutted into Miami with playoff hopes dangling by a thread. All they needed was to beat the Marlins while the Reds lost in Milwaukee. The Reds did their job and lost.

New York rolled out eight pitchers, dragged Edwin Díaz into the 5th inning, scratched together five hits, struck out 11 times, and got blanked 4-0. Absolutely perfect.

The Mets Are Dead. Long Live the Collapse.

On June 12, New York had the best record in baseball. Twenty-one games over .500. A 5.5-game division lead. From there, they finished with a 38-55. One of the worst collapses in baseball history. Only the 1905 Indians and 1977 Cubs faceplanted harder.

Alonso and Díaz can opt out. Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Nimmo are locked up, but the pitching staff is a mess. Rookies Nolan McLean, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong might stabilize things long-term, but good luck explaining to fans why a $350+ million roster finished 83-79 and couldn’t even stumble into a wild card.

The New York Mets have been eliminated from the MLB Playoffs:

Meanwhile, the real teams get to play for something.

The Dodgers and Reds square off in the 3/6 matchup, with the winner drawing the Phillies in the NLDS. The Brewers will take the Padres/Cubs winner.
