WATCH: AJ Brown wanted the ball, got the ball, then picked the worst time to quit on a route
I really wanted to just look over this and not even write about it but at this point, it’s time we enter the conversation. AJ Brown is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and when he spends the past few weeks saying that the Eagles’ passing game has been piss-poor this season, there’s no doubt that he has a point.
I would like to think that AJ Brown’s frustrations are warranted.
Again, there’s no denying that he’s one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and if you look at the numbers the Eagles’ offense has posted over the first five weeks, then there’s reason to believe that they should be focused on getting Brown and Smitty the ball a lot more if they want to win football games.
Brown pointing out the issues could be looked at as someone who’s trying to light a fire under his teammates to get things worked out.
Fine. Whatever. Then this happens and now we’re back to square one and I can’t help but think that AJ Brown is falling into the always-classic “diva” category that often plagues wide receivers across the NFL.
AJ Brown wants the football, doesn’t show it on the field:
Did AJ Brown stop running here or was the ball overthrown?
Honestly, I don’t think Jalen Hurts overthrew AJ Brown here. It definitely looks like Brown flat-out stopped running his route because he figured the ball wasn’t coming his way.
That obviously can’t happen when you have spent the past two weeks lobbying for more passes. It gets even worse when the offense literally bends the knee and schemes itself around your demands. That means AJ Brown cannot coast on a play that could’ve been six points. Either he’s the leader pushing for the offense to evolve, or he’s the guy mailing it in because you’re in your feelings.
Can’t be both, brother.
AJ Brown got what he wanted…
Brown’s public frustration worked. The game plan was pass-heavy from the start. Hurts threw it 38 times. Brown got 8 targets, DeVonta Smith got 10. Meanwhile, Saquon Barkley got six carries. Total. That’s usually one series for him, not an entire game.
AJ Brown called for more throws, and the team obliged. Then when it mattered most, the route was half-baked. The kind of effort that makes you wonder if he was more interested in being proven “right” than proving he’s the guy who can back it up.
I wish it didn’t have to be this way but what else are fans going to think now? It’s a shitty narrative that no one actually wants to discuss but unfortunately, AJ Brown forced our hands to address it.
It’s one loss. The Eagles get a short week to flush it out. If things start to spiral and this season starts sliding the wrong direction, that one play will be circled as the moment the drama outweighed the production. The receipts will come out.
AJ Brown is supposed to be the guy who raises the standard, not the guy caught jogging on a would-be touchdown route after a week of press conference tantrums.
Overall, I’m not concerned about the Eagles, AJ Brown, Jalen Hurts, or DeVonta Smith. They will figure it out. Everything will be fine, but if it’s not fine, then you know exactly where things started to trend in the opposite direction.
