Anonymous Eagles player tells Jeremy Fowler this season ‘feels like 2023 all over again’
An Anonymous Eagles player told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler exactly what a lot of fans have been thinking over the course of this young season after getting stomped by the Giants.
Should we be worried about the Eagles’ offense? Are they worried about it?
Graziano:Â I lean yes on both questions, with the caveat that they’re 4-2 and in a position to be able to fix their problems in time. But there are problems, and they do need to be fixed. It’s easy to default to “Oh, there’s locker room tension,” but I really have never had the sense that Eagles players have any personal issues with one another. They all want to be better, and if there’s tension, it’s because of the two straight losses and the urgency they all feel to get it turned around.
Fowler: I was at the game against the Giants on Thursday night and definitely sensed concern. One player told me that this is starting to feel like the 2023 meltdown all over again (when Philadelphia lost five of its last six games), and the team needs to use this week to figure things out and avoid a full-blown repeat. Right tackle Lane Johnson, whose words carry weight, told reporters that the offense felt predictable. The issue is pretty clear: The Eagles aren’t dominating in the running game the way they did a year ago.
Sweet. I wish I could say that I’m surprised, but this has been circulating in the media and fan circles for weeks now. It’s often been countered by referencing the 2024 seasons’ slow start which, of course, ended with the team hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
Unfortunately for those looking to compare this season to one of the two, I have some bad news for you: These are the 2025 Eagles. Completely separate from either one of those teams.
I totally understand the desire to compare. We fancy ourselves as a fan base with a high football IQ, and we are. But that comes with this compulsion to think we know exactly things are going to go in this situation.
Pattern recognition is only human. Bracing yourself for a disappointing collapse is also a very human trait.
But I want to be very clear, if this team collapses, it’s going to make 2023 look like a smashing success. That team at least had the illusion of being a good team before the bottom fell out.
So, before you jump to conclusions about how badly this season will go, let me remind you that it can – and most likely will – be much, much worse than what you’re imagining.
Go Birds!
