Weekend Rips: Eagles seek revenge, Sixers have hope, Flyers try to get hot, Union playoff run begins

We’ve been blessed with a beautiful fall weekend in the Philadelphia area. Even better, the sports gods have bestowed us a weekend schedule featuring four teams all going. With each team playing at home, one could easily find their way to attend all four games in legendary fashion. Are you up to the challenge?

With the Phillies in the rearview and the Eagles bouncing back, I’d say things have improved in our fair city. Combine that with a scintillating Sixers season opener, the Flyers looking solid, and a Union playoff campaign, and it’s hard not to feel good.

Don’t worry, I’ll always find a way to be unhappy, but our sports teams are doing their best not to be the reason why. It’s a gorgeous weekend jam-packed with sports.

Tell your significant other you ain’t going to no pumpkin patch. You’ve got beer to drink and sports to watch.

An all-day Saturday bender is absolutely in play. It’s time to let it rip.

Eagles seek revenge on the Giants at home – Sunday @ 1 pm

Who the hell let the Eagles get hot??? Well, the Minnesota Vikings did. Jalen Hurts gave fans a lot to be excited about with his perfect passer rating en route to getting AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith the ball at an obscene rate.

Add in the potential return of Brandon Graham, and you’ve got yourself a team with some serious juice looking for their get back. The Giants cannot be excited to walk into the Linc for a Kelly Green game and line up across from a team that wants to crush them and a crowd that wants them dead.

Jaxson Dart may be feeling pretty good about their win on TNF a few weeks back, but he’s not ready for an environment like this. I’d take the Eagles, the points, AJ Brown anytime TD, and that’s just the start. Have a day, folks.

Sixers look to build on impressive season opener – Saturday @ 7:30 pm

The buildup to the start of the Sixers’ season is a lot like getting a text from an ex. It’s a whirlwind of emotions ranging from dread to excitement to general concern for your own well-being.

Rookie VJ Edgecombe’s incredible 34-point debut in a win against the Celtics has Sixers fans who were on the fence about this season ready to get hurt again.

Metaphorically, of course.

Allegories for my failed romantic pursuits aside, this Sixers team pleasantly surprised me with that win. Tyrese Maxey was a flamethrower, dropping 40 points of his own. Sure, Joel Embiid is looking rusty, but he’s only going to get better.

The 76ers will host the Charlotte Hornets – one of the most ridiculous teams in the league – on Saturday night. Needless to say, I’m pretty confident this team can handle LaMelo Ball and Kon Kneuppel. It’s an incredibly confusing roster, but I’ll be happy to have this on the TV with a beer in my hand.

Flyers host the Islanders – Saturday @ 12:30 pm

As usual, I’ve consulted with host of The Liberty Yell, Chris Stumpo, for his thoughts on this matchup. His response is something I can’t put into print, but suffice it to say he’s not optimistic the Flyers will perform well against the Isles.

After further discussion, he’s delivered these three key points for your consumption:

  • Matthew Schaefer. #1 overall pick 2G-5A-7P in his first 6 NHL games as an 18-year-old child – insane.
  • Flyers’ PK is tied for 10th in the league. Have killed 8 out of the last 9 penalties. 3/3 vs MIN and 5/6 against Seattle
  • Vladar got his 3rd straight game on Thursday vs. the Senators, so it will probably be Ersson in goal, so we’re at a disadvantage there. Vladar has been noticeably better to start the season.

I’ll have this up on one of my screens

Union open playoff run against Orlando – Sunday @ 5:30 pm

The Philadelphia Union open their playoff run against Orlando City, looking to make another deep postseason push. The two sides have split results in recent years, setting up what should be a tight and physical matchup. With Subaru Park behind them and their attack starting to click, the Union will try to set the tone early in front of a home crowd hungry for a playoff run that ends with some silverware.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.
