Two Phillies named finalists for Silver Slugger Awards
It’s no secret that during the regular season, the Phillies’ lineup was one of the most feared in baseball. As expected, that means there’s going to be some hardware up for grabs following the conclusion of the World Series.
Bryce Harper named Gold Glove finalist, Turner and Stott somehow left off the list
Defensively, Bryce Harper is a finalist for a Gold Glove already. On offense, Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber were both named finalists for the National League Silver Slugger Awards, given annually to the top offensive players at each position.
Phillies Updates: Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber Silver Slugger Finalists
Trea Turner was solid all year
After an uneven 2024 campaign, Turner looked like his old self again. He won the NL batting title with a .304 average, becoming the first Phillie to lead the league in hitting since Richie Ashburn way back in 1958.
He finished second in hits (179) and fifth in offensive bWAR (5.3), even while missing 18 games with a hamstring injury. Down the stretch, he went nuclear, hitting .412 over his final 32 games to vault into the batting race lead.
This is Turner’s second career batting title and his second shot at a Silver Slugger, having won the award in 2022 with the Dodgers.
The competition at shortstop, though, is stacked. Turner will be going up against Francisco Lindor of the Mets and Geraldo Perdomo of the Diamondbacks. Both posted higher overall WAR totals, with Lindor’s 31 home runs and 86 RBIs standing out.
Trea Turner’s case rests on his consistency, clutch performances, and the fact that he was one of the few true five-tool shortstops in the league this year.
Kyle Schwarber will miss out because of Ohtani…
Meanwhile, Kyle Schwarber put together one of the loudest offensive seasons in Phillies history. He led the entire National League in home runs (56) and RBIs (132), while finishing second in slugging (.563), OPS (.928), and extra-base hits (81).
That’s the kind of production that usually guarantees a Silver Slugger, if not for the presence of Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani, now a full-time hitter for the Dodgers, hit 55 homers of his own and finished with a higher OPS (1.014) and slugging percentage (.622). He also led the league in runs scored (146) and OPS+ (179).
So Schwarber might fall just short of another Silver Slugger because of Ohtani’s freakish year, but make no mistake, his season was MVP-level by almost any other standard.
If both Turner and Schwarber take home the honors, it would mark the first time since 2022 that multiple Phillies hitters have won in the same season.
The Silver Slugger winners will be announced on Thursday, November 6 at 6 p.m. ET on The Baseball Insiders YouTube stream.
