Derrick Gunn claims Eagles are fed up with Jalen Hurts, calls him “Carson Wentz Part II”
After the dust settled on another Eagles win, Derrick Gunn decided to lob a grenade into the discourse and commit the ultimate crime: calling Jalen Hurts “Carson Wentz Part 2.”
Derrick Gunn on the Eagles frustrations with Jalen Hurts
“There is a lot of people in that [Eagles] organization that are frustrated with the QB situation…This is almost Carson Wentz part 2.”
A lot has been made about these comments already, most of it coming from the two far ends of the reaction spectrum.
Let me just start with this: calling Jalen Hurts “Carson Wentz all over again” is insane. It’s simply not reality. Even from the outside looking in, everyone saw the Wentz collapse coming for years. There were anonymous complaints flying around, his play cratered, and the vibes were awful. None of that exists with Hurts, and he hasn’t even sniffed the level of bad quarterbacking Wentz put on tape during his final stretch with the Eagles.
But the idea that people inside the building are frustrated with Jalen? I don’t think that’s far-fetched at all. Everyone involved with this offense should be frustrated. If you’re not, you probably shouldn’t be here.
This offense is broken. They can’t do anything consistently, which shouldn’t even be possible for a group that features two Pro Bowl receivers, a Super Bowl MVP quarterback, and the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. At some point, the blame shifts directly to coaching.
I’m not a film nerd and won’t pretend to be one, but based on the All-22 breakdowns floating around, the issues almost always come back to play-calling and overall scheme. Yes, Hurts has missed open guys — so does every quarterback in the league.
Now let’s put the “frustration” chatter into perspective. I don’t know where Derrick Gunn heard this from, but my guess is offensive coaches. And honestly, if you’re Kevin Patullo, why would anyone on this offense take your word as gospel? Your title means nothing to a room full of players who already won a Super Bowl and a quarterback who’s had about 10 different play callers in the last decade.
Patullo inherited one of the most dynamic offenses in football and hasn’t produced a single game worth bragging about. His scheme and play design stink. Coaches are supposed to put players in positions to succeed — period. Players can’t bail out a garbage scheme every Sunday. That’s not how the NFL works.
Hurts needs to be better — everyone can see that. But pretending this is all on him, which is exactly what calling him “Carson Wentz 2.0” implies, is just stupid. Every single person on this offense needs to step up and fix it. That’s how team sports work.

Has to be the worst take I’ve ever heard from someone I’ve never heard of…
Grow up philly fan for dropping to new low of even publishing this absurd nonsense..
Hey Rob, thank you for the thoughtful feedback! I appreciate you reading!
Brian- I have a more appropriate take.
AJ Brown is Terrell Owens part II…
I don’t think it’s even close to being that bad. The TO experiment lasted 1.5 years before it all fell apart. We’re in year 4 with AJ and have 2 Super Bowl appearances plus a SB win during those years. I agree that i wish AJ didn’t talk about internal stuff as much, but if you think it was as bad as TO, i encourage you to go back and read about how bad it really got during those years. This ain’t that
