Eagles blow 21-point lead in Dallas, putting entire offensive staff on the hot seat
What a shit show, huh? The Philadelphia Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead over the Dallas Cowboys in the first half, only to scrape together a little over 100 yards of offense the rest of the way. They kept putting the defense in awful spots, gave up 24 unanswered, and handed Dallas a win they had no business getting.
I genuinely want to throw up. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but it starts and ends with the offensive coaching staff. And not just Kevin Patullo, either. As much as I want his ass out of the building, he’s nowhere near the only culprit behind this disaster class. Nick Sirianni and Jeff Stoutland deserve every bit of heat, too.
Sirianni’s ultra-conservative approach after building a big lead once again screwed this team. Stoutland’s offensive line has been bad this season — no way to sugarcoat it. After the game, Landon Dickerson was asked about the Eagles’ nonexistent running game, and he had this to say:
Eagles coaches aren’t preparing their players for every possibility, which is obviously a huge problem
You heard the same sentiment from a few offensive players after the game — that the Cowboys’ five-man fronts were some brand-new wrinkle, which is why the coaches didn’t prep for it. That simply isn’t true.
Just last week against the Raiders, Dallas ran a ton of 5-2 base and 5-1 penny looks, and they were effective as hell. Sure, maybe it’s “new” for them. But once they added Quinnen Williams, it was obvious they’d look for ways to get all three of their interior studs on the field at the same time. How does that get completely overlooked by the coaching staff?
And to be clear, I’m a fucking idiot — and even I figured this out. So what does that make Kevin Patullo and Nick Sirianni? How am I, a self-described fucking idiot, diagnosing an opponent’s defensive tendencies better than they are? It’s a legitimate question.
Dickerson’s comments were damning, but I don’t think anything tops what Jalen Hurts said when asked if he’s surprised the Eagles offense still hasn’t found consistency.
I still have complete faith in Hurts to figure this out. He has it in him — and so do AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and Saquon Barkley. They’re all capable of carrying this offense. They’re just being handcuffed by an incompetent coaching staff. Letting this much talent go to waste week after week is straight-up malpractice.
If you’re Jeffrey Lurie or Howie Roseman, how long do you sit on your hands before stepping in? This is what you invest all that money for, and the people you’ve trusted to run it clearly aren’t holding up their end. From a pure business standpoint, this is bad management playing out on the field in real time.
Something has to give. Sirianni has never been some brilliant offensive mind — which is why every time the Eagles have success, it’s the offensive coordinator who gets hired away. Something tells me no one will be beating down the door for Kevin Patullo this offseason.
