Justin Herbert fractures left hand, Eagles could face Trey Lance on Monday Night Football

The Philadelphia Eagles might be catching a massive break in Week 14, because Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert fractured his left hand during Sunday’s win over the Raiders. It is his non-throwing hand, but the injury was serious enough that Herbert will undergo a medical procedure on Monday.

Jim Harbaugh announced the fracture after the game and admitted he isn’t sure whether Herbert will be able to suit up against the Eagles on December 8. Herbert hurt the hand on the first drive of the game and still played through it, finishing 15 of 20 for 151 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while the Chargers scaled back the offense to protect him.

If Herbert cannot go, the Chargers would turn to Trey Lance. And let’s be honest, nobody knows what Trey Lance really is. The former No. 3 overall pick has only five career starts and is 2-3 with an 81.7 passer rating. He’s barely played football since the 2021 draft.

Regardless of who plays quarterback, expect the Chargers to run the ball until the Eagles prove they can stop it. The Bears just gashed Philadelphia for 281 rushing yards. The Chargers just ran for 192 against Vegas. They would be insane not to test that matchup early and often.

Even with all that said, Justin Herbert is telling reporters that he plans on playing, which sounds brave, optimistic and maybe a little reckless. Treat that as “to be determined.”

The Eagles’ schedule finally softens after a brutal start, but that won’t matter if they keep playing down to their opponents. Whether it is Herbert or Lance under center, Philadelphia needs to get their act together.
