Darius Slay is ‘contemplating retirement’, could be an escape plan to be released by Buffalo in order to play for the Eagles
What an absolutely chaotic 24 hours. On Wednesday, Eagles fans had to accept the reality that there would be no reunion with Darius Slay after the Buffalo Bills claimed him off waivers.
The Eagles put in a claim, but Buffalo had priority and scooped him up.
End of story, right? Absolutely not. This thing has legs. Slay was expected to fly to Buffalo, take his physical, and get ready to face the Eagles in Week 17. Instead, he hit the brakes and told the Bills he might not play football at all.
Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN that Darius Slay is taking time away to decide if he even wants to continue playing. He added that Slay is honored the Bills claimed him, which is a very polite way of saying his client has zero interest in joining the Bills.
Darius Slay “contemplating retirement” and will not report to Buffalo
Here is where things get interesting with Darius Slay…
A player claimed on waivers cannot immediately go sign somewhere else. The claim is irrevocable. Buffalo owns his contract whether he reports or not. If Slay refuses to show up, the Bills would likely release him. Because he is a vested veteran, he would instantly become an unrestricted free agent instead of going back through waivers.
According to sources, this was the plan all along. Darius Slay and his camp are trying to force a release, bypass the waiver system using his veteran status, and then sign wherever he wants.
The team he wants is the Philadelphia Eagles.
Yes, this is real life. Darius Slay is essentially trying to jailbreak himself out of Buffalo before he even walks in the door. It sounds bonkers because it is. It is also very on brand for Slay, who has never been shy about making his preferences known and has deep ties to the Eagles locker room.
Is this a good football move? That depends on who you ask.
Slay struggled this year in Pittsburgh. His coverage numbers were rough. He was benched. It was objectively the worst season of his career. But the Eagles have spent four months playing cornerback roulette.
They traded for Jaire Alexander, who retired instantly. They traded for Jakorian Bennett, who buried himself on the depth chart. Michael Carter II became a safety. Adoree Jackson is now CB2 because everyone else imploded.
So if Slay wants back, and the Eagles want him back, and Buffalo is stuck holding a contract for a player who refuses to report, this circus may actually work.
The wild part is that Slay might pull this off legally. Veteran rules allow it. The Bills cannot stop him from stepping away. They cannot force him to play. They cannot revoke the claim. Their only real option is to cut him and move on.
The moment they do, the Slay to Philly reunion is officially back on the table.
This feels like something straight out of a movie. The Bills make the claim. The player refuses to show up. The agent talks about soul searching. The Eagles sit quietly in the dark waiting for the call and everyone pretends this is normal.
It might actually happen. Stay tuned. This saga is far from over.
