Sixers Drone

There was a drone flying around the Sixers game, and I hated every second of it

The Sixers lost a close one to the Lakers last night, 112-108, and while LeBron’s fourth-quarter heroics frustrated me to no end, it was far from the worst part of my evening. In fact, my issues lie not with the on-court performance, but NBCS Philly’s decision to fly a drone around the broadcast during the second half. It made an already tough watch borderline unbearable.

NBCS Philly’s Sixers broadcast is already one of the NBA’s worst, and this drone just makes matters worse:

Seriously, what are we doing here? I don’t know how people watching at home are supposed to stomach this, especially during a close game.

I genuinely cannot understand the decision-making process here. Oh, the Sixers are down three with 35 seconds left? Perfect, let’s fly a drone around the stadium and drive TV viewers absolutely insane. Everyone will love that!

Of course, it doesn’t do them any favors that Kate Scott and Alaa Abdenaby are the corniest commentators in all of sports. I loathe them both as individuals and as a pairing. They make locally broadcast Sixers games immensely less enjoyable, full stop.

And I don’t want to hear anything about me disliking Kate Scott because she is a woman. Morgan Freeman could say the corny shit she says, and I’d still roll my eyes so far back in my head I risk severing my optic nerve. I have a few years as a sample size, and my decision is final.

I understand the drone shots are used in the broadcast, but they look horrendous. It’s like they strapped a Flip camcorder from 2008 to the old Lays blimp that would drop coupons in the stands and used it to record highlights. Truly awful on all counts.

This just goes to show that more technology for technology’s sake is not always a good thing. If they were to find a drone that cost more than $50, a camera that shoots higher than 144p, and fly it high enough that it was out of frame, it’d make more sense.

But, of course, that is not what we have here. At present, it’s an eyesore that represents something far more sinister in American society. I feel like I’m watching the beginning of the worst Black Mirror episode of all time.

NBCS Philly… please figure this shit out. Your broadcasts suck enough as it is. Let’s not make matters worse unnecessarily.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.
