Playoff Scenarios: How the Eagles clinch the NFC East and make a run at the 2-seed
The Eagles got exactly what they needed in Week 15. After three straight losses and a week of nonstop panic, Philly took out every ounce of frustration on the Raiders in a 31–0 beatdown at the Linc.
The reset button was officially smashed and now at 9–5, the Birds are back in control of their destiny with three games left and plenty still on the table.
Step One: Win the NFC East (and Shut Everyone Up)
This part is simple. The Eagles can clinch back-to-back NFC East titles as soon as this weekend, which would make them the first team in the division to repeat in over 20 years. Here’s how it happens.
Eagles win on Saturday OR the Cowboys lose on Sunday.
Simple enough, right? Again, the Eagles sit at 9–5. Dallas is 6–7–1. One Eagles win or one Cowboys loss and the division is locked up. No drama required.
The Cowboys host the Chargers on Sunday, while the Eagles get Washington twice and Buffalo to close the year. Handle business and the NFC East division title stays in Philly.
Step 2: Eagles Playoff Seeding, Where Things Get Messy
Right now, the Eagles are sitting in the 3-seed, which guarantees at least one home playoff game. That alone is massive but it does beg the question what needs to happen in order for them to move up in seeding. Can it happen? Technically, yes but we should also manage expectations.
The 1-Seed
For the Eagles to somehow steal the No. 1 seed, everything would have to break perfectly in their favor. Philly would need to win out and finish 12-5, while the Rams would have to lose at least two of their final three games.
On top of that, the Seahawks, 49ers, and Packers would also need to stumble down the stretch. The Bears, who currently sit in the No. 2 spot, would have to lose at least two of their remaining three games as well.
In other words, it’s technically possible but let’s be honest, it’s a long shot bordering on fantasy. The Eagles would need to go 3-0 while at least five other NFC contenders collapse to 1-2 or worse.
To Recap, the Eagles would need the following:
- Win out (finish 12–5)
- Have the Rams lose at least two of their final three
- Get multiple other NFC contenders to completely implode
It’s possible on paper. It’s not something you should emotionally invest in.
The No. 2 seed is far more realistic, even if it still requires help.
Locking that spot down would likely guarantee the Eagles two home playoff games, the same path they took during last season’s Super Bowl run. To get there, the Bears would need to completely fall apart and go 0-3, or finish 1-2 while the Lions run the table at 3-0. The Packers would also need to finish 1-2.
Here’s how the NFC contenders’ remaining schedules shake out:
- Rams (11-3): Seahawks, Falcons, Cardinals
- Bears (10-4): Packers, 49ers, Lions
- Eagles (9-5): Commanders (twice), Bills
- Buccaneers (7-7): Panthers (twice), Dolphins
- Seahawks (11-3): Rams, Panthers, 49ers
- 49ers (10-4): Colts, Bears, Seahawks
- Packers (9-4-1): Bears, Ravens, Vikings
- Lions (8-6): Steelers, Vikings, Bears
The 1-seed would take chaos across the entire conference. The 2-seed is doable, but still unlikely without help. The most realistic outcome remains the Eagles taking care of business, locking up the division, and hosting a playoff game as the No. 3 seed.
No need to overthink it. No need to panic. No need to refresh playoff simulators every five minutes. Win games. Stack weeks. Let everyone else stress. That’s how this team won a Super Bowl last year. And it’s how they’ll give themselves a real shot to do it again.
