Eagles clinch historic NFC East title with statement win in Washington
The curse is officially dead. With a 29-18 win over the Washington Commanders, the Philadelphia Eagles did something no team in the NFC East had managed in more than two decades by winning the division in back-to-back seasons.
The Birds walked out of Northwest Stadium in Week 16 as repeat champions, the first team to do it since the Andy Reid era from 2001 through 2004.
Philadelphia improved to 10-5, locked up the NFC East, and guaranteed themselves at least one home playoff game. More importantly, they snapped a 21-year run of division chaos that had defined the NFC East as the league’s most unserious grouping. Stability is back, and it’s wearing midnight green.
A quick look at the NFL week 17 odds shows that Philadelphia is still firmly in the hunt for playoff seeding, provided they keep this momentum alive, however we should clear up that the No. 1 seed in the NFC is now dead.
Teams ahead of them like Seattle and San Francisco still play each other, at least one of those clubs is guaranteed another win. That alone mathematically eliminates Philadelphia from the top spot, even if the Eagles win out.
The Eagles Run Game Took Washington’s Soul
This game was decided in the trenches. The Eagles piled up 385 total yards, including a dominant 207 on the ground. Washington managed just 220 total yards and never looked capable of keeping up physically.
Saquon Barkley was the engine.
He finished with 132 rushing yards and a touchdown, and his presence alone broke the Commanders’ spirit. His 48-yard run in the fourth quarter flipped the field and set up the dagger score. He even punched in a two-point conversion just to make sure there were no doubts.
Jalen Hurts played clean, efficient football. He threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns, added 40 yards on the ground, and was pressured on just four of 37 dropbacks. When your quarterback has that kind of protection, everything else falls into place. DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert both cashed in, and the offense stayed on schedule all night.
Numbers Never Lie
Eagles-Commanders Game Notes:
The night started shaky with a fumbled opening kickoff, but that was the last moment of uncertainty.
In the first quarter, Washington struck first with a field goal, but Hurts answered quickly with a five-yard touchdown pass to Smith. The Commanders briefly retook the lead in the second quarter with a short rushing score, but that was as good as it got for them.
The third quarter flipped the game for good when Goedert hauled in a 15-yard touchdown. From there, the Eagles leaned into their identity.
The fourth quarter was all ground and pound. Barkley scored from 12 yards out, then Tank Bigsby ripped off a 22-yard touchdown run that ended any remaining suspense.
Defense, Depth, and a Little NFC East Chaos
The Eagles defense set the tone early and never let go.
Cooper DeJean picked off Marcus Mariota on Washington’s first drive, immediately putting the Commanders on their heels. Even when injuries forced rotations up front, the depth showed up. The interior defense shut down Washington’s run game completely, logging six tackles and four run stuffs from replacement personnel alone.
Late in the game, things turned ugly. A fight broke out after a long Barkley run, leading to three ejections. It was messy, physical, and entirely on brand for the NFC East.
Washington’s quarterback situation never stabilized. Marcus Mariota and Josh Johnson combined for just 138 passing yards. A late touchdown made the final score look closer than it was, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Statement Made
The Eagles didn’t just clinch the division. They imposed their will.
They ran the ball, protected the quarterback, dominated the trenches, and walked out with history in hand. The NFC East runs through Philadelphia again, and for the first time in a long time, it looks like that might actually last.
The bigger goals are still ahead. But one box is officially checked.
