AFC Playoff Picture Explained: Who’s in control, still fighting and who’s already cooked

With two weeks left in the regular season, the AFC playoff race is still making things way more complicated than they need to be. Some teams control their destiny, others are praying for help and a few are basically dead but haven’t been officially buried yet.

Here’s how the AFC shakes out heading into the final stretch.

AFC Teams in the Driver’s Seat

Denver Broncos (13-3, AFC West leaders)

Denver controls everything. Win their finale against the Chargers and they lock up the AFC’s No. 1 seed. Lose, and things get interesting. That’s it. Simple.

New England Patriots (12-3, AFC East leaders)

The Patriots are walking a tightrope. They’re chasing Denver for the top seed while also trying to keep Buffalo off their back in the division. On paper, their schedule at the Jets and home vs. Miami is about as friendly as it gets.

If they go 2-0, they still need Denver to slip up against the Chargers to grab the No. 1 seed. Otherwise, they’re likely stuck at No. 2.

Jacksonville Jaguars (11-4, AFC South leaders)

The Jaguars are still alive for the top seed, but they need chaos. They must win out, see Denver lose, and hope New England drops a game. It’s possible, but it’s not exactly likely. More realistically, Jacksonville is focused on holding off Houston in the division.

Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6, AFC North leaders)

The Steelers might back into the division title without lifting a finger. If Baltimore loses this weekend, Pittsburgh wins the AFC North automatically. If not, they can still handle business themselves with a win over Cleveland. It’s not pretty, but it works.

AFC Wild Card Teams With Bigger Goals

Los Angeles Chargers (11-4)

The Chargers are already in, but they’re not settling. Win their last two games and they jump Denver for the AFC West thanks to a head-to-head sweep. That Week 18 game in Denver suddenly matters a lot.

Buffalo Bills (11-4)

Buffalo is in the playoffs, but winning the AFC East is an uphill climb. They need help from the Patriots, who have the easier schedule. Even if the Bills win out, they may still be stuck in the wild card.

Houston Texans (10-5)

Houston is the definition of dangerous right now. One win or one Colts loss gets them into the playoffs. But the real prize is the AFC South. If they win out and Jacksonville slips even once, the Texans can steal the division on tiebreakers. From 0-3 to this? That’s impressive.

The Teams Still “In the Hunt”

Indianapolis Colts (8-7)

The Colts need help, but they’re not dead. Win out and hope Houston loses to the Chargers. If that happens, Indy sneaks in via tiebreakers. It’s a long shot, but it’s still alive.

Baltimore Ravens (7-8)

Baltimore is hanging by a thread, and Lamar Jackson being doubtful makes things worse. A loss this weekend or a Steelers win sends them home. If they somehow survive and beat Pittsburgh in Week 18, they could steal the division. That’s a massive “if.”

Everyone Else: Done

Miami, Kansas City, Cincinnati, the Jets, Titans, Browns, and Raiders are all officially out. Some were eliminated weeks ago. Others just finally stopped pretending.

The Big Picture

Denver controls the conference. New England is close behind. Jacksonville and Houston are on a collision course in the South. Pittsburgh is trying to win ugly. Buffalo is dangerous but boxed in. And the rest of the AFC is either clinging to hope or already planning vacations.

Two weeks left.
