Jalen Hurts subtle shot at Carson Wentz is good news for Tanner McKee

If anyone understands how important a healthy quarterback room is, it’s Jalen Hurts. This week, without naming names, Hurts reminded everyone exactly why the Eagles are in such a good place at the position now, and why things were not always that way.

With Nick Sirianni choosing to rest starters in Week 18 against Washington, Tanner McKee is set to make his second career start. On the surface, this should be a low stress, backup quarterback gets his reps type of week. Instead, Hurts quietly stole the spotlight with comments that told the story of two very different eras of Eagles football.

When asked about McKee’s development, Jalen Hurts leaned heavily into something that does not get talked about enough in the NFL. Communication. Trust. Continuity.

Jalen Hurts on Tanner McKee

“Conversation. Dialogue. Those things matter,” Hurts said. “He’s been a constant in our room the last three years. We’ve gone through changes together, processed teams together, taken coaching together. That stuff is valuable. I try to be an example because I didn’t really have that. So I know it’s something he values.”

That line matters. “I didn’t really have that.”

No names were mentioned. None were necessary.

This isn’t just good-guy talk. McKee’s development backs it up.

Anyone who lived through the awkward, fractured quarterback dynamic of the Carson Wentz era knows exactly what Hurts was referencing.

The Eagles once had a room where competition turned toxic, communication broke down, and development suffered. Hurts lived it. And he clearly made a decision early in his career that if he ever became the guy, he would do things differently.

That difference shows up in Tanner McKee.

When McKee was forced into action last season with both Hurts and Kenny Pickett banged up, he did not look rattled. He did not look overwhelmed. He looked ready.

He completed over 66 percent of his passes, threw four touchdowns, and did not turn the ball over once. That does not happen by accident. That is preparation. That is trust. That is a quarterback being brought along instead of boxed out.

Jalen Hurts has treated McKee like a partner, not a threat. And now, with the Eagles resting most of their starters, that investment gets tested again.

I am not overthinking this. Tanner McKee and the backup unit are more than enough to beat a bad Commanders team. And if the Bears happen to lose to the Lions, even better. The Eagles could still stumble into the two seed while doing the smart thing and keeping their stars healthy.

More than anything, Hurts’ comments should make Eagles fans feel good about where this team is headed. The quarterback room is stable. It is collaborative. It is healthy.

That alone is a massive win.
