Traitor: Cutter Gauthier returns to South Philly tonight and should yet again, be booed into oblivion for turning his back on the Flyers
Philadelphia Flyers selected Cutter Gauthier at pick No. 5 in the 2022 NHL Draft. Shortly after, he informed Flyers organization that he’s a coward and a traitor. Cutter Gauthier did not want to play in Philadelphia.
That said, it’s no surprise that Cutter Gauthier quickly turned into one of the most hated athletes in Philadelphia.
He had zero interest in ever playing for the Flyers. It was a pure display of cowardice at the highest level and Flyers fans are rightfully still pissed about it.
As a result of his own actions, Cutter Gauthier was shipped out of Philadelphia to rot in Anaheim as a member of the Mighty Ducks. In return, the Flyers got Jamie Drysdale (dog) and a 2025 second round draft pick.
The first time Cutter Gauthier came to Philly, he was met head-on with a very hostile crowd of Flyers fans.
He was taunted relentlessly, with boos raining down every time he touched the ice. Chants of “FUCK YOU, CUTTER!” Echoed through the rafters and even the Flyers scoreboard operators made sure to capture every single moment where Cutter was getting bullied on the ice.
Flyers Fans: “FUCK YOU, CUTTER!”
Even during warmups, fans held up signs like “CUTTER IS SOFTER THAN BUTTER,” setting the tone for what would be a long night for Anaheim’s young forward.
The Flyers thrived off the energy and routed the Mighty Ducks 6-0 in the game.
That brings us to this week, where the Ducks are making a return to South Philly tonight to take on the Flyers. Broad Street Hockey, which correct me if I’m wrong, used to be a part of the corporate suits over at SB Nation, wrote an article saying that it was time for Flyers fans to move on from the Cutter Gauthier discourse.
Broad Street Hockey: “It’s time for Flyers fans to move on from the Cutter Gauthier discourse”
Yeah… how about no? Talk about a brutal suggestion, even if it was just to drive engagement for the tweet, which all things considered, is exactly what it appears to have done.
I didn’t read the article but I was tagged in the replies along with Kevin Kinkead over at Crossing Broad. He already wrote about it, which you can read here. Kinkead pointed out that the article itself was really just a comparison between Cutter Gauthier and who the guy got in return, Jamie Drysdale.
Here’s an excerpt Kinkead referenced from the Broad Street Hockey article:
“Drysdale was placed in a much more favorable developmental situation in Philadelphia than he was in Anaheim, and the emergence of a bona fide top-four defenseman is arguably more important than another winger for the current Flyers organization. It depends on if you view a top-four, play-driving defenseman or a top-line winger as more valuable in the current landscape of the NHL, but either way you shake it, it’s not a massive difference for the Flyers and Ducks organizations today.”
Fine. Whatever. The Flyers organization is a disaster. Tell us something we don’t know.
Cutter Gauthier wanted no parts of it which honestly, I understand. At the same time however, there’s no world where he should not be booed relentlessly, told to fuck off, and be one of the most hated athletes in Philadelphia sports history.
That’s showbiz baby.
If you openly reject coming to Philadelphia, you’re an enemy. There’s no other way around it. That’s just how the cookie crumbles. Cutter Gauthier is a fucking quitter and any time he even steps foot back in the Northeast, let alone Philadelphia specifically, he should be reminded of that, regardless of what anyone else wants to tell you.
