Vic Fangio vs. Kyle Shanahan: The numbers tell a one-sided story
Vic Fangio has, and probably always will, own Kyle Shanahan. I’d imagine Shanahan’s sleep paralysis demon is Fangio, scheming up defenses in the corner of his room, while Shanahan quivers in fear. I can’t prove that, but I can prove that Shanahan stinks whenever he faces the Eagles defensive coordinator.
Vic Fangio has never allowed more than 15 points to a Shanahan coached offense
Vic Fangio has consistently had the upper hand over Kyle Shanahan whenever their units have matched up, with Shanahan never scoring more than 15 points against a Fangio-coached defense across four career meetings.
Those games span from 2011 to 2018 and include multiple roles for both coaches, but the theme remains the same: Shanahan’s offenses struggle to finish drives, while Fangio’s defenses dictate terms.

The most recent matchup came in 2018, when Fangio’s Bears held the 49ers to three field goals, allowing just 47 rushing yards and zero touchdowns. In 2017, Shanahan’s Niners again failed to score a touchdown, beating Chicago solely on five field goals despite decent passing volume.
The earlier matchups (2011 and 2013) came when Fangio was San Francisco’s defensive coordinator and Shanahan was Washington’s offensive coordinator. In both games, Fangio’s defense overwhelmed Washington — holding them under 200 total yards in 2013, forcing multiple sacks, and completely erasing the run game in both contests.
Across all four games, Shanahan’s offenses were methodical but toothless: yardage without payoff, short throws without explosive plays, and consistent red-zone failure. While quarterback quality and era context matter, the numbers show a clear pattern — Fangio’s disciplined, assignment-sound defenses have repeatedly neutralized Shanahan’s West Coast concepts, motion-heavy misdirection, and yards-after-catch philosophy.
Bottom line: when Vic Fangio and Shanahan meet, points are scarce, touchdowns are rare, and Shanahan’s offense winds up stuck between the 20s.
