Fernando Mendoza Unhinged: Takes shot at Miami and has hilarious slip up following Indiana winning the National Championship
Fernando Mendoza is absolutely electric. Whether he’s on the field threading tight-window throws, taking a beating and popping right back up to deliver another strike, or off the field with a camera or microphone in his face, he’s a nonstop lightning rod of energy.
Mendoza’s story is a Hollywood script. A local kid from Christopher Columbus High (just a mile from the U of Miami), Mendoza dreamed of playing for the Hurricanes, but Miami never even offered him a walk-on spot.

Fernando Mendoza ended up getting that sweet, sweet revenge, by playing the long game. After taking a scholarship at Cal, he would eventually transfer to Indiana with his brother and help lead this historic Indiana Hoosiers team to their first National Championship.
On a fourth-and-5 late in the fourth quarter, Mendoza took the snap and flew straight up the gut of Miami’s ferocious defensive line, bouncing off multiple Hurricane defenders, getting spun around and even colliding with one of his own linemen, yet stretching the ball over the goal line for a touchdown that pushed Indiana ahead for good. A play that would perfectly sum up the night and the style of game it was.

With that score, the Hoosiers went up 24-14, and they held on to win 27-21, becoming the first team in the modern era to go a perfect 16-0. Mendoza finished 16-of-27 passing for 186 yards and added that crucial rushing TD to cap the win. After the game he was still smiling through the literally all of the blood and sweat; like the true psychopath that he is.

He obviously meant he was willing to eat any hit Miami gave him, but the phrasing sent everyone into orbit. Even head coach Curt Cignetti marveled at Mendoza’s toughness – “He keeps getting back up. Just a great competitor,” he said – while the internet went nuts over Mendoza’s choice of words.

The funniest part about this is that Mendoza is probably too pure, wholesome, and unintentionally funny to realize the wild shit he said. And that’s what makes this kid so likeable.
Oh, and did I mention he’s basically the consensus #1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft? Pretty cool stuff. And while I will never understand why it took a month for the CFB National Championship game to finally be played, I am very satisfied with the result. That was awesome.
