Eagles OC Search: Another candidate removes name from consideration
As the Eagles’ search for a new offensive coordinator heads into week three, another candidate is out. Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has officially withdrawn his name from consideration.
Doyle out as the next Eagles OC
I can’t say I blame Declan Doyle for staying put. Coming here wouldn’t even be a promotion, he’d still just be the offensive coordinator, and he’d be walking away from the continuity he’s built with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams in Chicago.
And while it might feel like the sky is falling because nobody wants to come here, the Eagles seem perfectly fine taking their time. Per Zach Berman, the organization isn’t worried about this dragging out. They want to get it right, and they’re going through every candidate carefully before finalizing a deal.
The real hang up in this search, in my humble opinion, is the Nick Sirianni factor. Howie and Lurie, and even Nick himself, can tell candidates “this will be your offense” all they want. We all know that’s probably not how it’s going to play out.
Sirianni can’t help himself. He always meddles in the offense, even when they won the Super Bowl two years ago. The goal here is to find a guy who can work with that, build an effective gameplan, and then call plays that actually connect and create an identity. That was Kevin Patullo’s biggest downfall. He had all the pieces, he just couldn’t figure out how to put it all together. And he was also an embarrassingly bad play caller, which didn’t exactly help his case.
At this point, I think we’re looking at Jim Bob Cooter as the next OC. The fanbase probably won’t like it, but for some reason, I just have a feeling that’s where this ends up. Only time will tell.
