Andy Reid is vouching for Matt Nagy, which means he’ll probably be the Eagles next offensive coordinator

Whenever Andy Reid speaks, Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie are usually listening. Whether we agree with it or not, the Eagles brass puts a ton of weight into what Reid says, even though he hasn’t coached here in over a decade.

Recently, Reid was asked about his former offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, and his ability as a playcaller. The former Eagles head coach had nothing but praise for Nagy, telling reporters he doesn’t understand why Nagy isn’t getting head coaching opportunities.

Andy Reid going to bat for Matt Nagy can only mean one thing…

Reid has played a role in a handful of Eagles hires since he joined the Kansas City Chiefs. Most notably, Doug Pederson. Pederson was Reid’s OC for a year before landing in Philly as the Eagles head man, all because Reid vouched for him.

The Eagles got dragged at the time for that hire. Fast forward two years and Doug led the Birds to their first-ever Super Bowl victory.

Almost everyone this team hires has some sort of connection to Reid. In their minds, Reid is the quintessential offensive mind in the NFL. He’s been around forever, never seems to fall behind the curve, and just wins all the time. Given the Eagles’ track record here, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if they pull the trigger on Nagy.

He’s probably the safest hire you can make. No one will be overly excited, so if it fails, he becomes the scapegoat. If it works, it’s not a given he immediately bolts for a head coaching job, at least not after year one.

Andy Reid’s opinion still carries a lot of weight in this city, and he may have just gotten his friend a new gig.
