Doomsday Clock 85 Seconds to Midnight

4 Seconds Closer to Freedom: Doomsday Clock takes a leap, putting the world the closest it’s ever been to Armageddon

The Doomsday Clock moved again, because that’s what it does. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced Tuesday that we’re now at 85 seconds to midnight, which they say is the closest humanity has ever been to a human-caused global catastrophe.

Last year, we were at 89 seconds, so congratulations to everyone involved. We are officially four seconds closer to freedom.

Doomsday Clock now at 85 seconds to Midnight

The Bulletin’s reasoning is the usual greatest hits playlist.

Nuclear risk. Climate change. AI being used without guardrails. Biotechnology concerns. Countries acting more aggressive, adversarial, and nationalistic. Basically, the world is messy and the adults in charge are not exactly earning trust right now.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Doomsday Clock, it’s not a real countdown and it’s not a prediction. It’s a symbolic warning tool and midnight represents global catastrophe.

The Science and Security Board sets the time each year based on their view of the world’s risk trends, and the whole point is to scare leaders into cooperating before something goes sideways.

Here’s my issue. I’m not a Doomsday Clock guy.

Never have been, either. Either put up or shut up. Every year it’s the same routine. Big vague threats and broad strokes lead to a few seconds shaved off the clock and a shittty press release showing the worst people in the world (speculation) flipping this clock around.

From there, we’re all supposed to do what exactly? Stop and reflect about the actions that people way out of our control are taking on the global stage? How is that going to help anyone? It doesn’t. Obviously. A mere five seconds after the updated clock is releaved, everyone goes back to arguing about pointless shit on social media.

That tells me that the majority of people won’t even be told or hell, even realize that they were told the world is coming to an end so at this point, this thing feels like the scientific version of talking shit on social media like the rest of us.

The audacity of these people to come out and post something like this while at the same time, trashing conspiracy theorists that don’t have a big dumb clock to back it up is absolutely insane.

Durrhhhhh “things are scary!!”. No shit, Sherlock. Welcome to Planet Earth.

We’ve already been through a pandemic, constant war headlines, nuclear saber-rattling, AI paranoia, and whatever new crisis drops every week. I keep reading shit online saying that Jalen Hurts isn’t elite while trying to figure out why Joel Embiid isn’t being mentioned in the NBA MVP conversation.

You think I time to focus on this type of shit? You’re going to need more than four seconds to shake anyone these days. I’m battle tested. We’re all battle tested. A clock face isn’t moving me.

So sure, 85 seconds on the Doomsday Clock is the closest ever… again. Four seconds closer than last year. If you want me to care, give me something more than a symbolic adjustment and a list of problems everybody already knows exist.

Until then, enjoy the update. We’re closer to midnight for sure, or if you prefer my framing, we’re four seconds closer to freedom.
